second job - vent

I have just been called in to a meeting by my boss. I have worked for the company (large multinational/ non customer facing role) for five years. No sick, No late record, unblemished work sheet plus three commendations. I have no disciplinary or adverse work issues which I have been made aware of.
In the evening I have a second job for a few hours three nights a week (petrol station), and for some reason my boss hates it. I mean gets really irrational about it. To the point I never mention it and when I am asked how my evening was by other team members. I say it was a boring night at home because he gets all stroppy and snippy. My second job has never impacted on my main job.. and I mean never.
He has told me I have to quit it effective immediately or he will discipline me looking to fire me.
What really irritates me is the other three members of my team have outstanding discipline and probations for sick/ late times and work performance issues, despite procedures regularly move their shifts left right and centre for childcare/Drs /dentist without notice - causing wide spread chaos …. but I, the solid, reliable and productive member of the team is being punished for a second job I NEED to bring in money for the bills which he agrees has not impacted my work but is hung up on the fact he feels my 'loyalties are divided'
Mmmmmm steady paying career job vs. petrol station clerk…. no contest. So no division of loyalties there.

As you were working at the petrol station before you started at the "main job", did you make them aware of this when you were interviewed or at any other time before your employment began?
If so, and they knew about it and still gave you the job, then it might be worth contacting a solicitor who deals with employment related problems to get their advice.0 -
I don't see what your time outside of work has got to do with your boss, its none of his business, you can work as many hours in as many jobs as you see fit.Owed out = lots. :cool:0

Many employment contracts ban or restrict second jobs, and these clauses can be totally legal.

Outright ban on a second job during the hours that an employee should be available for the employer. For any other job undertaken outside work hours the prior written permission of the employer is required. Permission will be refused if the second job competes with the employee's first job or would be detrimental to their first job.

In theory, what you do outside your normal working hours is your own affair. However, as in theory what you do may cause a conflict of interest, or make you tired or distracted, or you may use the main job's facilities for the other work and take phonecalls and emails, some companies do put restrictions in their contracts of employment.
It sounds as though the petrol station work is completely different from what you are doing in the daytime, so possibly only the second point is relevant. I know someone who worked in an office during the day, and in a pub three evenings a week so the same point applied. She was obviously exhausted, and was asked by the main employer to give up the pub job as she was too tired to concentrate. She felt that she had to do what they asked.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

My contract at work clearly states that I have to declare any other work (paid or unpaid) outside of my main employment.
