Get the new clutch
Mine's got 163,000 on it and still running fine. I had my new clutch at about 130,000.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

VW Scirocco will be affordable before the A1, and it seems to be essentially the same car.
I wouldn't buy either not until atleast 5 years old, it just screams "I wanna pretend im middle class".“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Get the clutch done, and pray that the gearbox lasts---a very weak point on Polos.0

The Scirocco is nice too. Although maybe a little big for me. Big cars intimidate me somewhat!
Roddydogs - that's what my OH said when he first looked at the over-revving he wasn't sure whether it was the clutch or the gear box. To be honest I don't really know much about cars but he said that if it was the gear box it would be much more expensive.
Fingers crossed Hopefully my polo will last me another year or two before I can afford to get another car!0 -
My old Nova 1.2 did 220k miles before I got rid of it, still had the original clutch on it lol:A0

How many gearboxes?
My grandfather kept same broom for 30 years, it had 4 new handles and 7 new heads :rotfl:“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Having just had to get rid of my Mk4 Golf as an MOT failure last month, I would suggest that you try to make sure that this isn't the only problem you have got with your car.
I was advised by a VW specialist that the Mk4 1.4 & 1.6 engines around this time are notoriously poor. So I suspect that you will probably have the same 1.4 mk4 engine I had in my Golf.
The clutch could be the start of many more problems to come.
If you or the mechanic are 100% that the clutch is the only problem and £200 will sort it, I would pay the £200 and get it fixed, BUT if you suspect it could be something else or there could be other problems I would seriously consider getting rid.
My Golf was a V reg and had about 86k miles, but it failed it's MOT on emissions and I was advised it needed a new engine!
When is the MOT due?0 -

Just the original one cheeky
A fair few exhausts though, probably about 4 I think but at around £80 a chuck I wasn't too worried.
Don't make 'em like they used to.

Get a new clutch...
For info my Golf is now about 19 years old,is coming onto 98,000 miles and still has its original clutch which still has plenty of bite on it. Its all about driving you see....Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
