Price of Linoleum/Vinyl For Kitchen Floor?

Hi Everyone,

I need to get a new piece of linoleum for the kitchen floor. It's 112 inches wide and 192 long (not sure how to work out what this is in square metres?) What should I be looking for in terms of quality and what should I expect to pay for the linoleum and fitting? I've looked in one shop so far and the guy I talked to has scared the living daylights out of me by quoting over £300 for it including £80 for fitting!! I think this is very excessive (I hope so anyway as it's way over budget!) so if anyone has any suggestions of cheap places to look I'm all ears! Thanks.

Regards

Michelle

It would help if you did the actual measurements in metres. A rough conversion is that you floor measures 2.9 x 4.9 metres = 14.2 square metres or thereabouts. You can then work out from the prices you see in the shops how much that will cost you for materials. Most vinyl comes in 3m and 4m widths, so you might be lucky and be able to buy 5m of a 3m-wide roll if the room is in fact less than 3m wide all the way along (you need to measure at a few points along the way_ and if my conversion's been accurate enough. You might even be able to pick up an end of roll.

Re quality, it's up to you. The more cushioned the vinyl is, the nicer it is to walk on, but the more likely it is to be damaged by heels, pet claws etc - pull out your fridge, and you'll probably rip a ruddy great hole in it. A ceramic tiled floor probably would cost you somewhere in the same price region and last a lot longer - but they can feel cold, can be slippery, and are totally unforgiving to dropped dishes.

£80 seems reasonable for fitting - a kitchen often needs a lot of cutting and takes a while.

    Hi tawnyowls,

Thanks for your help. Oh so once you know the measurements in metres you just multipy them to get the square meters then?! I see, that's not so hard. Well I've remeasured again and in metres it is 4.826 metres length x 2.8448 metres width which equals approx. 13.8 square metres. I've measured it at the widest points of the kitchen and I definitely would be ok with 3m width.

I've done a little more shopping around today and thankfully found some places with much better prices. I found a few places I could get similar linoleum for £115 with £5 for delivery and £25 to fit it (the £80 to fit nearly gave me a heart attack!) I think that's much more what I was hoping for - can anyone confirm this is probably the best deal I can hope for? Thanks.

    Regards

    Michelle

    Thanks.

Am not sure whether to put down a shhet or have separte tiles of lion/vinyl in my new kitchen and in the utility room.

What is the advantage of tiles vs single sheet?

any advice from forum members re best options for kitchen floor will be appreciated
  • Do under no circumstances go for the cheapest Lino, it may look great for the first week, but once you have pulled a fridge out or move anything heavy, it rips and tears, trust me, I've been there and done it. Cork Tiles may be an option, very cheap, easy to lay, no specialist equipment needed, warm underfoot, and once it's varnished, quite hard wearing. Good Luck with the DIY!

I bought B&Q vinyl tiles and they were reduced to £1 a pack!!!! Got enough for downstairs bathroom and upstairs bathroom too cost me about £22!!! And i'm gonna fit it myself! They are nice, upstair bathroom black slate look and down stairs white with beige flecks through it(?)!!! I know the white one sounds dodgy but it was cheap!!!! My cousin was in focus 3 days ago and they had vinyl wooden look planks down to a £1 a pack she bought enough for her kitchen and dinning room!! I have vinyl greyish slate ones in my kitchen and they are really nice and soooooo easy to lay. I've had them down for 2 years now and if you ever did want to change your colour scheme it's easy enough and cheap enough to keep up with the trends.:T

Oops sorry forgot to say that the vinyl tiles would be easier to lay because you won't have to deal with loads of lino folding/creasing etc. You can take your time laying the tiles and they stick to the floor. Make sure your floor is flat with no bumps though as you will see this but in saying that you'll see bumps with lino too. Try it yourself you will save loads. Good luck
