Just what is the Average UK SALARY?

average salary is pointless..
look at your particular career/job , work out the experience gained, the sector and then.
If the 26k is average, being a doctor on £35k is above average but for a doctor this is very low, most doctors seem to earn vast fortunes. £80k a year+0 -

Junior doctors start on 22k... A doctor in specialist training will earn 29k a year. It's only when they start on a speciality they earn > 36k a year (source: http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/details/Default.aspx?Id=553)0 -

That's interesting that public sector average is slightly higher. Those of us who work in private sector are frequently told how much more we earn - maybe the top earners are earning more but the middle earners are evening the averages out. Which actually means that averages do mean something at least, so long as we remember that the higher earners do raise the bar somewhat.0

Martin's recent blog post is great to read about the different kinds of averages there are:
http://blog.moneysavingexpert.com/2011/03/14/are-you-above-average-why-mean-mode-median-matter-for-moneysavers-especially-for-premium-bonds/
I think it's more useful to think of 'typical' salaries for a particular region/employment sector, rather than median averages, which, as has already been pointed out, are distorted by Russian oligarchs/footballers etc. Wish I could get my head round statistics better, my maths is very rusty.Competition wins: 09/12 bottle of cognac; 01/13 combi microwave0 -

i was thinking more Gps not trainee docs
Salaried GPs employed directly by PCTs earn between £53,781 to £81,158, dependent on, among other factors, length of service and experience.

Yes - that's something that has come up before. It's generally explained by the fact that most of the lower-grade jobs (Cleaners, Security Guards, Canteen Staff, etc) have been outsourced out to private companies. Thus, making them "private sector" employees and pushing the public sector average wage up artificiallyHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. 26k for average is cobblers.
You get ppl earning hundreds of thousands to people earning peanuts full time or part time.

I'd be interested in seeing the average salary statistics by age bracket as well as region..
That would give people a better way of comparing themselves to others.0
