Also it will depend what you mean by average. I imagine the median would be a lot lower than the mean.

Too soon for this year but for last year from NSO:

"median weekly pay for full-time employees in the UK grew by 2.1 per cent in the year to April 2010, to reach £499."

This however doesn't tell you an awful lot because the salary *you* can command varies significantly by gender, age, experience, location etc.

Ever heard the expression "birds of a feather flock together"? Over time, people tend to associate and hang out with people of a similar experience and profile. As you say, in some circles, not many people would earn £26,000 and in others it would be see as a quite low salary.

£26K when I last looked (for a presentation I did).
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

pointless considering an "average" salary based on the way it's calculated, better to look for a sector relevant average as i can guarentee you that you won't find an average retail worker getting £22k a year - so hardly an "average" which is reliable.

Just pointing out that for an average of 22k based on a working week of 37.5 hours you'd need a salary of £11.28 to achieve it per hour.

Oh, blimey! Where in the West Mids? That's where I am too and can only think of one friend off the top of my head that's unemployed.

I would imagine that £26k in this area would be quite a bit higher than the average.

In this part of the country anything over £20K would be a very well paid job indeed. Most jobs advertised are NMW or just above apart from occupations which have a nationwide pay structure such as teaching.

It really depends. In london the average salary will be well over 30k. However houses and the overall cost of living are far higher than in, for example, the midlands.

In London, many people who are 40% tax payers will not feel at all well off. In Coventry a 40% tax payer is doing very nicely indeed.
Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger
