Thanks all for your comments. Leaves me feeling even more worried to be honest. Especially as the landlord is male, I'm female and from the looks of it, not allowed to have a lock on my door!
    Lots of things to consider.
    Again, warmest thanks!

Bear in mind he may not know about the exclusive occupancy bit, and may provide a lock for your peace of mind. It would be in his interest to, if he wanted to market to male and female lodgers.

I think if I were to let out a room to a lodger (male or female), I would probably at least allow them a standard bolt on the inside of their door to ensure their privacy while actually in the room - just as I would expect the toilet/bathroom to be fitted with such.

If I were a lodger and wanted certain items to be private, then I would buy a lockable box/case/trunk/portable firesafe.

either you have the personality to share with someone or you don't, its not a friendship but it is a relationship, it requires give and take and understanding from both sides. I assume you have no experience of sharing so don't know yourself yet?

its like getting a job, you go for an interview, they assess you, you assess them. Will you like it based on only seeing them for 1 hour of interview, once you start work you'll soon find out if you were right - some you'll win ... some you'll lose

if you don't want the risk then you'll have to rent on your own, this obviously is a (lot) more expensive
