Rafvr

Options
Hi All,

My granfather was part of the RAFVR many years ago, and sadly passed away, also many years ago.

I wondered if anyone knows how I could find out anymore info about him or possibly where he has been buried?

Asking my parents is not an option, Im not in contact with my dad and my mum doesnt talk about it - long story. :(

Thanks

Do you know anything about his military career?

RAFVR is the Volunteer reserve, and were mainly Aircrew, so he could have been anything from a pilot through to involvement with the Air Cadets (These are usually RAFVR(T) though) You could try contacting RAFA if your details are very sketchy on him

If you know his full name and service number it will help, and you can pay for his service records from the MOD (Subject to him having passed away more than 25 years ago, as I'm not sure if you'd qualify as next of kin?)

As to where he's buried, do you know where and when he died, will be hard to find anything I'd expect without those details.

    Good luck in your search

Thanks for your reply, this is going to be a lot harder than i thought.

Unfortunately I only know he was a flying instructor, his name, that he worked for the RAFVR and his work location. I dont know when he died or where ;-(

Kcgc, don't give up, it will be hard I've no doubt, but sure that the info you require can be found somewhere.

I'm Ex RAF, and have lots of spare time now sadly lol, if you want, you're welcome to PM me all his details regarding his military service and i'll have a search/dig around and try and get you started if you want.

You'll probably have to search the national census's etc to try and find where and when he was last around, there are lots of genealogy sites that might be of some use

Although this might not be of any assistance...(i know why do I bother)

But you can ask for service records of relatives. The reason why I say it might not help is you need permission from the NOK, which is likely to be either your Mum or Dad (see the problem). The vetrains web site has a few good pointers on tracing family history and service records.

You could also try posting on e-goat, which is a RAF forum. Might have some old guys on there that knew your grandad, if it wasn't too long ago. But the might be able to point you in the right direction.
