Hi,

Topsy- 3year old chiuahuah/poodle X Yorkie
had the boy op last Thursday, Obviously he was very upset when he came home Thursday evening and didn't sleep much that night.

He was sick that night, took that as normal, he had royal canine for dinner as needed a mild food.

Friday he slept on and off in the day, gave him Metacam as prescribed after food.

He was was sick Friday evening, white fluid.

Saturday went for 2 day check, he had a slight temp, 103, He was given an Antibiotic shot and vet checked him over.

Saturday/sunday spent most of day and night trying to get lampshade off and looking miserable, Tried boxer shorts, but he way too skinny and wanted those off.

Monday he was back at vets as they wanted to check him, they advised a change of lampshade size to stop his manic attempts at getting to his missing parts. They also removed his dressing.

He is absolutely distraught, he hasn't eaten since coming back from vets.

His collar before was 12cm, now he has 15cm, he def can't get to his bits now, but can't eat with it on and isn't drinking at all.

Can't give him his antibiotic pill as he hasn't eaten, can't give him metacam as he hasn't eaten.

He isn't crying now, he does that on and off when he tries to get collar off.

He is very listless and really peed off.

Any ideas on how to get him eating and drinking?

He isn't back to vets till next Monday for his 10 day check.

Sorry for his history but thought it would help people understand his situation, he also isn't allowed walks for a few more days, he has the run of the garden but barely wonders out.

He Didn't poop Saturday, he waited till late Sunday, and again he hasn't pooped yet today.

  • Hi,

My molly was really upset for the first couple of days after getting her done. with regards to him not being able to reach his food, for molly was sat the bowl on something that raised it up high enough for her to reach it in her collar. And with all pills no matter how meat flavoured they are supposed to be I have to put them in the back of her mouth and hold her mouth shut while rubbing her throat til they are swallowed. chances are he will be feeling sorry for himself, but if you are concerned that he isn't acting right then ring or take him back to the vets.

What about trying to tempt him with some chicken, hand fed if necessary.

If he'll eat the chicken on it's own, then try it mixed with some boiled rice.

I really hope he picks up soon. If not, I don't think you'd seem like a neurotic mummy to take him back to the vet, and let's face it, who cares if you do :D

ETA: The not drinking is rather worrying as he's liable to dehydrate. I've seen some good advice from YorkiePud on how to get water into him on another thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3151494

Thanks for help, Walwin, I don't why i didn't think of chicken before? He devoured the remains of Sundays chicken, which i'd put in freezer, I'm off to Tescos in a min so will get a calpol syringe and use that as he will drink droplets from my fingers but turns his head away from bowl.

I wish I could take it off but he is a *chomper* and his lampshade was changed for a larger size as he had half his dressing off, Vet is concerned if he gets to *it* too quick he will end up with an infection.

Found a small stool and raised his bowl, thank you for help xxxx

He sounds like he is a little depressed. Animals can suffer depression bouts as we can. When we had our dog and she had her op for cancer..she also had a lampshade to stop her nibbling stitches but it did make her very low and upset. she used to sit there looking very dejected and sad and the vet said to keep an eye on her as she may be a little Low. All i can advise is holding him and lots of comfort and chicken breast and a little boiled rice or Lightly scrambled egg was what our Sasha loved. Its just time and if you have any concerns then the vet will check him over. This time next week he should be back to his usual self bless him xxx

He had a sticky pad type thing?, It was slightly blood soaked.

As I went to tescos last night, I popped into Pets at home, and picked him up a new lampshade, one with padding by neck and rim, same size but a wider funnel part, he is so much happier, he is eating and drinking and actually ran into the garden.

I think the vets lampshade must have dug in as he raised his head and caused him discomfort, he actually slept all night and is following me around the house again.

Many thanks for all you help x

Just be aware Toni, Metacam can cause vomitting also so the cure may also cause the problem.
Glad he sounds better today however :-)
