International Calling Cards

I bought an International Calling Card from Tesco, to call my sister in Dubai. Big Mistake, Do Not buy these cards. It's all quite simple, you just buy the card, you can put £3, £5 or £10 on it. You then ring the access number which is an 0208 number which actually charges you to connect which isn't made clear at all at time of perchase or on the card. I have been charged an extra £30 on my BT house phone, for a £10 calling card. Tesco blame BT, BT blame Tesco. You cannot win. Don't ever buy them! You aparently can ring an 0800 number free of charge but it's not at all obvious!!
Be careful guys, don't get scammed like me, it can happen on any phone network!

This is not in anyway a scam.

Tesco operate several Access Numbers, 0800, 0208, 0121 etc - all very clear here http://phone-shop.tesco.com/broadband-and-home-phone/international-calling-cards/faqs.aspx

If you dial 0208 you are going to be charged whatever BT charge you for a 0208 number. You should dial 0800 from a land line (assuming it's free), and the 0208 number when from a mobile.

Of course they do, because in reality, it's really is your fault.
  • I also use this card regularly to call Turkey from my UK landline, it certainly isn't a scam. The charging rate listed fro Turkey is 2p a minute from a landline, but it is actually only 1p a minute. This is cheaper than a standard UK landline call.

The card comes with an attached instruction sheet and clearly details usage instructions, etc.

It saves me £20-£30.00 per month on direct dial calls.
