My lad is going to Uni in Notts but rather than looking at stopping there he was planning on going by train everyday but to buy seperate tickets works out about 40 quid a week (10 quid a day for 4 days mon to thurs)
Whats the options on purchasing tickets in advance ,unable to use a student rail card as that states something about not using during peak times and he would be travelling something like 7.30 going and 5pm coming back
He has a car but that would cost more due to paying for parking as well ,havent looked at buses yet

Honestly - Its going to be one military style operation if your thinking of any advance tickets for this -If there are any available for such a short journey - because of how many you would be buying and keeping on top of it and making sure you have the right tickets each day - one slip and its a PF or UPFN..
Try looking at a term time only season ticket for him http://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/contactus/Pages/seasonticketsform.aspx contact East mids trains and ask there.."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
Thanks for link and replyHave a nice day

There are no Advance tickets available for a Lincoln to Nottingham journey, so it's simply a case of looking at the regular walk-up fares - as you realise, Lincoln Imp, the 16-25 (aka Young Persons) Railcard isn't much use here as before 10am on weekdays there's a £12 minimum fare (doesn't apply during July and August - but that's not much help here!).
A Lincoln to Nottingham 7-day season ticket is £47.40, and a monthly is £182.10 (the Anytime Day Return meanwhile is £10.60) - season ticket prices, including 'odd-period' season tickets for periods of more than a month, can be checked on the National Rail website here:
http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/s/seasonticket/calculator
Basically if he's only travelling four days a week then a season ticket isn't going to save him any money - however if it's possible that he might be travelling more often, then it'd be worthwhile thinking about a monthly or longer in particular (e.g. with a season, travelling 16 days in a month would work out at £11.38 a day - more expensive than buying a ticket every day, however it would take just one extra journey during that month for the monthly season ticket to be worthwhile).0 -
Unless things have changed, season ticket prices are worked out on the basis of 52 weeks for the price of 40, any less its pro rata, so work on that...The_Groat_Counter wrote: »There are no Advance tickets available for a Lincoln to Nottingham journey, so it's simply a case of looking at the regular walk-up fares - as you realise, Lincoln Imp, the 16-25 (aka Young Persons) Railcard isn't much use here as before 10am on weekdays there's a £12 minimum fare (doesn't apply during July and August - but that's not much help here!).

I disagree. Nottingham is not a CTA (compulsory ticket area) so you cannot be given a PF at the station. Nottingham-Lincoln trains are not Penalty Fare trains, so you can't be given a PF on one of these trains.Jeff_Bridges_hair wrote: »Honestly - Its going to be one military style operation if your thinking of any advance tickets for this -If there are any available for such a short journey - because of how many you would be buying and keeping on top of it and making sure you have the right tickets each day - one slip and its a PF...
Not quite sure what you are saying here? If you presented an AP ticket for the wrong day by mistake, the guard would ask you to purchase a new ticket. It is only if you were then unable to pay that a UPFN would be issued.Jeff_Bridges_hair wrote: »...or UPFN..0
