What cars are in group 1 for insurance?

I was thinking of changing my car, so I ran a set of insurance quotes through a comparisson site, to give me an idea. Since I last used that comparission site some stuff has changed:

I now have a child under 16 :j
I don't have any NCB anymore :(
This is because I had an accident in August and I was at fault :o
I do 10k miles a year now, not 7k.

My insurance last July (on a group 6 car) was just under £300. The quotes I was getting today were starting from £720. Oh God.

I've followed Martins advice about reducing car insurance costs to the letter, and will again when it's really renewal time (for now I was just looking). I'm a new associate member of the IAM, which might help push my premiums down if/when I pass my advanced test. All I can think of left to do now is go for a cheaper car to insure until I build my NCB back up and/or pass the advanced. Money is really tight, I'm a single parent. I need to cut every cost I can.

I would really like to know how I find a list of all the cars in insurance group 1, 2 and 3? I did find something on a website but the oldest car I saw listed was about 8 years old. I need to know the older ones too.

Also, have you got any other suggestions?
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
[STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

I don't think there are any.
Older cars start in group 3

Well I don't know quite how this has happened but...

The meerkat says if I were going to reinsure my current (group 6) Citroen Xsara from today it'd cost me £720
It was actually a Citroen C3 I was looking at earlier. Parkers says it's in group 3. The meerkat says insuring this car (which is 3 groups lower) would cost me £710

Has the meerkat been on the sherry? Does this sound wrong to anyone else?

Insurance group is no-longer a major factor in determining premiums. They collect stats on a per model basis as well as hundreds of other factors. The C3 is targeted at younger buyers, compared to the Xsara, so it's likely seen more crashes, putting the premiums up.

So basically you need to look at something seriously uncool, such as a Nissan Micra.

Just because the car is a lower group does not mean its cheaper to insure. On the old 20 group
    system i could insure a group 16/17 150mph car for less than a XR3i in group 12.

Depends on how many claims they have had for that car and its potential risk to be stolen.

Why are diesels dearer to insure?

I had a 92 panda 750. it was group 1 insurance in 2003 but back then i thought grous only went to 20. thonk its changed.

    Saying that...

I had an accodent and was my fault too that year. To re-insure it adter repair was £780. Dont think the type of car makes much difference when they're thee abouts.

What do you mean by this? How much NCB have you lost?

Regardless; subtract your old NCB % from current quotes and that will give you an idea of how much it has really gone up. From the figures you quote though it doesn't look that bad and if you have gone from 70% NCB to 0% (which I doubt) your insurance is positively cheap. :)

I had 2 years NCB before. I am not sure what exact cost difference it made to my premium.
