cleaning a carpet?

We have a cream carpet that is filthy, what's the best way to clean it? Should we hire one of those carpet cleaning machines?

I've heard that the 'Rug Doctor' machines are quite good...

I expect someone more expert will come along to give a more informed opinion...

i think you have to use carpet cleaner such as 1001 so you dont get too much foam

I cleaned my carpet this way but soaked any really bad stains in Ace bleach used neat for about 30 mins before I cleaned the whole carpet and it came up great

The Rug Doctor cleaning fluid is really expensive. Could I use Vanish?

i bought the 1001 cleaner at Poundland and used it in the Rug Doctor andit was fine, any carpet cleaner that is suitable for a machine could be used

Got some 1001 from B&Q and it's not taking out the stains well at all.

My son has just got a complete 2 bed house done. Bedrooms, living room, hall, stairs and landing for about £70 I think. maybe even less. They made a good job too.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
