Mouse/Curser Acting Up

My cursor is acting up weirdly this evening. Sometimes it's as fast as it should be and then it slows down so draggy that I can barely get it to move, then eventually it speeds up again.
I've tried making sure that the settings are ok and they seem fine. I'm wondering if something needs cleaning. It's an optical mouse and I don't know how to clean it, if it needs cleaning that is.
Any suggestions?
