Question for those of you using 'clumping' cat litter

I use a very good quality 'clumping' cat litter for the wee cat.I buy it in 10kgs bags, which last about 4-5 weeks.
Once a month I change (ie chuck out) and start over with fresh litter.During the rest of the month I top up the tray as and when required.
I have been thinking for a while now of not chucking out the litter, but just topping up continuously.I would clean out the litter tray regularly (have two trays),as I usually do.It just seems such a waste,as the litter I put out is essentially clean.
What do you think?TIA.

As a recent convert to clumping cat litter - slave to 4 cats (7 months each) that only live (read: poo/pee) indoors and with an extra large cat litter box (size of a baby bath).....
I but a 7kg bag of cat litter, it fills the litter box to about half its height - with 4 cats I am constantly scooping of course. By the end of the week (7-8 days) there is very little left on the bottom of the tray as far as clean litter is concerned but I sieve it (I use very fine cat litter, like sand) out of the box, clean the box, put another 7kg bag in and add the litter from previous tray - that lasts again another 7-8 days.
But I have 4 cats - the same bag with 1 cat would last me probably whole month and it is only £5.50 per a 7kg bag - from Pets and Home:
This is the kitten version of what I use for my 4:
They also do normal adult cat version:
But I use the multicat version from the same company:
All photos above linked to the website.....
I do nto throw away any litter at all with this one, siewe what is left in the box at the end of the week and put this back in the clean box....0 -
I completely change my litter once a week, so I can wash out the tray(s), but the days before, I start to 'run down' the litter in that tray and put a new one next to it (not practical for everyone), so by the time I empty it, there's not much left in the first one and it's all been used. My cats do have access to the outdoors aswell but i keep them in at night.
Note to anyone with a small kitten - you should NOT use clumping litter. As kittens explore the litter tray for the first time, they have a habit of eating it! Normal litter should pass through but clumping litter does exactly that in their intestines - i.e. clumps - and can kill them. I read this in a cat mag, not through personal experience thank goodness.
Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -
I use oko plus and have also wondered this OP! I find it starts to get rather sawdusty though after a few weeks and so I'm usually glad to dump it all. I think you could leave it though as long as you're scooping often. I'd say if you had a cat with any kind of immune problem or infection it might be best not to though.0

I basically just top it up forever. I wash the tray once a week but I have two trays, so I pour the old litter into the new tray then wash the old tray and put it away. If it looks like the litter is getting yucky I'll stop topping up and when it gets low I'll replace the whole lot.0

Thanks for that info about kittens. My kitty is 9 yo though,so no worries about that. She's a house cat;I don't have a garden, but have a tiny balcony.
The litter does get used up very quickly. The only time that the remaining litter would be unclean is if I accidently break up a ball of wee when scooping it out.
Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.Very helpful.0 -

I use the worlds best cat litter, scoop up the clumps and the unused litter falls through the holes back into the litter tray and it can be flushed away down the loo0
