You do have to be aware that all banks can close account/withdraw an overdraft and some indeed do so.
Have a look at the links above for thread which may help you find a basic bank account.
I would still start off the process now of getting your statements as this can take up to 40 days.0 -
I was wary HSBC would close my account (1200 OD always up to the limit) so have been hesitant to reclaim my charges, however a customer service guy whom I spoke to yesterday when chasing up my statements said this wouldn't happen. In the meantime though I have opened a Barclays account (so basic you can't even set up standing orders from it or have mthly statements!) and am in the process of wating to hear from Citibank, who apparently offer a visa electron, chq book and 500 OD (the overdraft is only avail if you have 1500 pm going in). Anyway I signed up through quidco as you get 50 cashback if they open your account!0

Hello, I hope you can help!
I am about to put a claim in to HSBC for charges. I opened my statement yesterday and realised they had whacked a £50 charge on - the over-over draw was incurred in December, in turn, this knocked me over again, so I'll expect another £50 charge at the end of this month.
I want to try and claim back these charges from these b*stards, but first I need to open a parachute account in case they tell me to get lost. How do I do this when not actually putting my salary in there? If HSBC don't tell me to get lost and close the account, presumably I can continue banking with them and close the parachute account? How does it work? I've looked through the info but can't pinpoint it!Proud to be dealing with my debts!!
Lightbulb moment - Dec 06
Debts at highest - £18k
Nationwide Loan - £9k
MBNA CC - 6k
Halifax CC - 1
Overdraft - 2k
Will increase loan to 15k over 4 years to consolidate overdraft/Halifax and 3k of MBNA. Leaving 3k to pay off quickly on MBNA...wish me luck! :T0 -
Have a read of the Basic Bank Account thread and consider one of the options there. You don't need to actually transfer any dds, salary etc into it but just have an account ready incase you need to use it.0

I have a poor credit rating and would have trouble opening another bank account, so Im hesitant to begin the claims process!
I have just opened a new account with Norwich and Peterborough Building Society - they even give you a cheque book with a basic bank account and you get an o/d and debit card with a standard current account.
https://www.npbs.co.uk if you want to apply on line - I am pleased so far.
I ended up moving everything over while my claim on RBS goes on as I am so utterly fed up with their lack of service that it was a breath of fresh air to move!0 -
before sending out the letter to my bank you advise of setting up a parachute account (in case they close the your account). Easy enuf to do from what i've seen but can u just set it up without them transferring all the standing orders, direct debits etc. if they don't close the account there is no need to swap banks is there?0

My husband banks with BOS and wishes to reclaim charges. However, his sole income is our pension of £527. He has an overdraft of £500 which he uses to the full every month. Would any bank give him an overdraft, under these circumstances? We have a very limited income so depend on this overdraft.
We are 77 & 78 and would very much appreciate any help you could give us.
Thanks.0
