I waited nearly 3 weeks for an item once. The seller came up with illness, broken car (?) and personal problems amongst her excuses. I did feel sorry for her at first, but after the first few excuses, that started to wane. When the items did eventually arrive they were broken, so not a good ebay experience, but thankfully rare.

I think OP has been lucky as few buyers would wait as long as hers.
  • Its always the responsibility of the seller to ensure the package reaches the buyer, whether your buyer pays for 1st class or special delivery. If you cannot prove your buyer received the packet you will always lose a paypal claim.

I agree, unfortunately I dont work for Royal Mail and so can't really be held accountable for what happens to the package after I post it, and so to say that its my responsibility to make sure that the package reaches the buyer is only 50% accurate, there is always going to be a point when its NOT my responsibility any more, unless of course I were to deliver each and every ebay item personally, which of course is rediculous. I think its all too easy to be pedantic about a situation when something goes wrong..!

In regards to the paypal claim, ive never ever been in this situation before so I have no idea what would have happened if indeed a paypal claim had been made, but that is a moot point because I am giving the buyer a full refund and cutting my losses.

And for the record, the item was bought for £30, I gave the buyer a £10 refund already as an apology for the hassle, as I am fully aware that it is not their fault..:(
6 debts down - 1 to go: just over £1000 though, soon soon....

Staying happy and positive through 2011 (hopefully!) :j

Yes, you can. You are responsible 100% until your parcel is in your buyers hands.

and so to say that its my responsibility to make sure that the package reaches the buyer is only 50% accurate,

Again, its 100% accurate. Again it is your responsibility until your seller receives his goods!

there is always going to be a point when its NOT my responsibility any more,

Correct, and that time is when it is in the buyers hands.

unless of course I were to deliver each and every ebay item personally, which of course is rediculous. I think its all too easy to be pedantic about a situation when something goes wrong..!

Or, alternatively you could send via special so you get a signature and know its going to get there, or, you can keep your postal receipts and claim back if an item doesn't after refunding your buyer.

In regards to the paypal claim, ive never ever been in this situation before so I have no idea what would have happened if indeed a paypal claim had been made, but that is a moot point because I am giving the buyer a full refund and cutting my losses.

Sending an item tracked is for your benefit not the sellers, and to be frank its quite worrying to find a seller that feels a buyer is partly responsible for a lost parcel.

If the shoe were on the other foot, if you had purchased a £30 item and your seller offered you only a £15 refund as it was 'lost' would you be happy with that?
  • Standard parcels can take up to 5 working days - you said it was sent last week but didn't mention which day. It's more then likely still on its way. Maybe mention this to your buyer to try and get another couple of days grace. With regards to the 'waiting for the money to reach your account before sending' - unfortunately unless this was a one off then I think maybe ebay isn't for you. The cause of your problem is the long period of time it took before the item was even sent. Whilst you may have had difficulties with illness maybe a friend/family member could have posted it for you? Unfortunately with ebay you have to put yourself out a bit.

OP, don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds to me like you don't understand ebay rules, and if you don't find out more you are likely to get caught out sooner or later.
you can't make the buyer wait until you get the money, you cold write you'll post after one week if you like, but your stars for dispatch would be low and you'd risk your account being limited/suspended.
They could also open a case for item not received and get their money back soon after you've posted, and you'd be without money and without item
if the item is lost, as others have said, ebay/paypal will refund the money back and charge your paypal account

IMO your attitude is all about protecting yourself at the expenses of your buyers, if it was the other way round would you have waited patiently?

You should refund and stop selling on ebay.

Would have been hard for me to send the package out with no money - guess thats why I had to wait for the money to clear into the bank account, which is why I put a postage time to reflect the time it would have taken for this to happen. But you know what, whatever - im not gonna sit here arguing with people who I dont know about how I ebay..bye.
I wasn't arguing, I was trying to give you advice to help you sell in the future. Like I said you can pay online with paypal so you don't need to have the money 'in hand'. :)

OP - i think you really need to spend some time reading up on ebay rules. It will benefit you in the long run. there are procedures that you need to learn about how long the buyer needs to wait before putting in a claim for item not received and also what you would do if that happened. You also need to read about protecting yourself from lost packages and delayed postage times.

Also - out of interest, what is your ebay user name?

I'm sorry, I thought you said that you weren't a 15 year old?

You know, I completely missed that line last night

Another classic case of not liking the advice so 'stropping off'. I predict a fairly short ebay career.
