B & Q charge for returning sliding doors due to their error!

I am livid at B & Q.
I bought 4 sliding doors at East Kilbride branch a month ago and after waiting all this time for them to deliver them, they've just delivered them, only for me to find they are too tall for the built in wardrobe space. When I've contacted them, they tell me that they only do one height. No-one bothered to tell me that when I handed over my measurements of the wardrobe space.
Don't get me wrong, the service was great but the aftercare is underhand. The printed confirmation note could tell me the width but not the height but we never thought anything of that when we paid for them. When they called today to arrange a pick up, I then get hit with a £20 pick up charge, even though it is their error. The man who phoned me started off very polite but when I told him I wasn't pleased at having to pay £20 and would complain, he became quite loud and sounded like he was reading off a standard reply to this (like this has happened before perhaps?...). He said it was my obligation to give the right measurements (which we had). If the assistant had made it clear that she couldn't fulfill my requirements, I wouldn't have ordered them, would I?
I'm disgusted at this lot. He said I could write to the Customer Services dept but you can imagine, if this is what their 'pick up' dept say, I'd just get the CS dept backing him up.
Who knows any decent company which does sliding mirrored wardrobe doors? I've seen some online, including Screwfix, but are they just not part of the Kingfisher group too?

when you gave them the measurments did you give them the door size required or the gap size ? was the door gear in place when you measured ?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I don't think you have a leg to stand on. Its not like they have sent you a different sized door. The sizes of the doors will be shown on their website and in the stores. Its up to you to satisfy yourself that they are the correct size.
they will assume that you kinow what size door you are buying.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Agree wth Phil. You bought the product. Its up to you to satisfy yourself that the product suits your requirements. Why should B&Q be penalised (can't believe I'm actually standing up for them for a change) because you bought the wrong item?

I gave them my gap size, width and height, and said I needed doors to fill it. When they printed off the confirmation note, the width was on it but not the height, but never thought more about it, just thought I'd get the sizes I asked for.
I'm just surprised they didn't get the doors with the measurements I gave them. Why would they give me a different height? I never saw any brochure, just asked the assistant, who keyed it all in and I thought we were sorted.0 -
B & Q have contacted me after my complaint to their head man and said they cannot understand why I was charged when it was their error. They were very nice about it all - just shows you what happens when you go to the big boss man - and reimbursed my full amount (inlcuding the £20 charge) and apologised. I will now shop there again as they have restored my faith in them!0
