Morning to all for whom it is morning there.
Feeling a wee bit fragile mentally here. Went for an ultrasound this morning to check that the thingy in my leg hasn't grown any because it's 2 years since my last, and if it had grown it'd negate the probable diagnosis and would likely be something nastier. Was wondering particularly since it hurts like a ******** (which is only going to get worse and that's according to the good diagnosis). Just a bit p'd off it's there at all really and feeling unnecessarily sorry for meself. Didn't help that the sonographer, after I'd explained the difficulties of potential treatments and that I'd had advice to leave it be until it was unbearable, concurred with the difficulty of treating it and wished me luck. Twice. I'm not too keen on it when a medical professional feels that I need luck.
On a moneysaving note - anyone know anyone who has good taste in shoes and only a left foot in a size six? That way if it comes to it that I end up down to one leg at least I can share shoes :rotfl:
Still I'm sure I'll feel better tomorrow. Might have to ditch the diet tonight and hit the gin and the choccy though.
Sorry to whine.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
I don't mind contentious
Why do you think I studied politics in the first place :rotfl: I agree that some students are little sh:eek:ts though.
I was terrified of the Clangers as a small child. The Moomins as well. I've no idea why, but they still put me on edge now! Bagpuss, on the other hand, I loved. And the Flumps. I knitted my brother a Pootle hat last Christmas. He knew exactly what it was as soon as he opened it!
A very sleepless night last night, which is silly. All these tests will do is tell me if I have something. If I do, I already did anyway. At least if we know we can start to treat it, right? Also the official letter confirming my grievance came through. I am so stressed right now!
Kidcat Ikea are definitely (and deliberately!) breaking the law. I'd make a couple of calls; their head office (might get a freebie!), trading standards, and the local newspaper. I despise the 'complain to the local rag' mentality (used to be a reporter for one) but things like this are a newspaper's dream and it WILL get results whereas the alternatives are long and drawn-out processes.
GQ, it's so sweet that you all rally round your nan. Too many pensioners are neglected by their families. As for the tent, could you not borrow one from someone? It always strikes me as odd, everybody buys their own and then use them for maybe ten days per year, max. Then buy a new one a couple of years down the line because it's bigger/better/different colour. I've always thought it's a shame more families / communities don't share things like tents, stepladders and powertools.
Haribo I love the idea of your journals too. Almost makes me want a child of my own (ha!) BTW one of my hobbies is bookbinding if anyone ever needs help with stuff like that. I'm not very good yet, but practise and all that!0 -
Softstuff :grouphug: Gin and chocolate sounds like a plan to me!
I'm sure all will be okay for you though xxx0 -
I was a student, many moons ago, and i did go out and drink and i didn't clean a whole lot and can bring my building site language into good use if i have to
(or for comedy value at the OH
). But i never wantonly destroyed anything and hopefully always had good manners and didn't particularly disrupt the neighbours.
I now teach in university and have to say that most of them are good decent people just trying to get a good qualification.
We have a house that we rent to students (it's our pension) and last year when we'd finished doing it up and furnished it i nearly wept thinking that "they" wouldn't look after it. I haven't been in since last June but OH has and says it's ok. We get new tenants today so hopefully they will take as good care. Ours is in an area that is mostly student houses so i shouldn't think any noisy behaviour will affect too many of the GBP.
Looking forward to my day off (tho i have just done an hours work) and a nice lunch out.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Morning All
HUgs to all that need them but especially JJ, softstuff and Larumbelle
Softstuff - please dont think you are whining. Its often wasier to "talk" to people outside the situation, than it is to talk to your nearest and dearest, and after all thats the wonderful thing about forums, you can let off steam, and discuss your worries without worrying about how it affects those closest to you. Really its one of the oldest style things we have ever done, talking over a cup of tea, its just with extended communities now we can do it world wide. Gin and choccy sounds good to me, I cant drink so you need to have an extra one for me please
JJ - about the black treacle, it lasts for years and years! Sugar naturally dehydrates so bacteria cannot thrive in the tin, and I dont ever remember having to throw out a tin of golden syrup or black treacle for that reason. Personally I use it to add to chilli and tomato based sauces as it adds wonderful depth.
Larumbelle - just hugs lol!
GQ - dont worry about the mini rant, sometimes we all need to do it just for our sanity, and I for one was not offended by it! I did have a giggle about your parents loft though, I have parents like that too, and have said that once they have gone I am going to get a skip out in the garden with a chute going from the top of the house becaue it is a miracle that the ceilings stay up if I am being honest. My mum hordes everything, she even has feather beds up there from the year dot, all of her french degree books (which were in the time of the dinasour) and endless amount of toot that "may come in useful". The sad bit of it is the things that are probably worth saving such as proper vintage dresses from the '50's and '60's are under it all somewhere and more than likely making a lovely home for moths or mice! Have the dogs with the biscuits and tea on standby just in case though.......
Well boys have gone back to school today after their day off but you can tell its the end of term because they are tired now, and counting the days down to the holidays. Today I am going to order school uniform, some of it will have to come from the school shop as M&S no longer do uniform big enough for DS1 even though he is only 14, and I refuse to pay upwards of £10 a shirt  especially as he grows like a weed. Thankfully the school shop lady is wonderful and has already told me that if he continues to grow at this rate (please no!) then she will order shirts in especially for him, she just needs some notice. Really given the size of many children today you would think that a lot of big retailers would recognise that they just dont come in standard sizes any more and they need to do some more measuring.
Then I am going to make some bath lotion and some massage cream today, base cream and bath stuff arrived yesterday so I am quite looking forward to that.
Off to check the recipe for butter now.......

I'm not very good yet, but practise and all that! Thanks Larumbelle, I did borrow a tent in June (gotta remember today it 1st July) and will feel a bit... y'know....asking for another loan in Sept for a weekend away. Only going a few miles up the road to celebrate a friend's Big Birthday (clue, has an "0" on it). Don't like to feel that I'm a scrounger. But family's different.........
I'll be interested to see if the Family Tent (a tan-coloured Campari ridge with a chocolate brown flysheet, now much faded) is still viable. One of my mates has one of the first-ever dome tents manufactured well over 25 y.o, I think, which is still going strong and it gets a fair bit of use. Before domes were commonplace, she ended up as sole-tent-standing on a site struck by a gale and made lots of new friends as soaked "refugees" were taken in to huddle from the lashing rains. When dawn came, she said the site looked like something out of the Apocalypse.....lots of tents were out to sea.
The Campari dates from the late 1970s. If you keep things long enough they become Retro and it may even be fashionable again. I used to have a Khyam Igloo (one of those domes with the poles built-in which sort of snap together like a foldiing umbrella). It was cool but under-used so I sold if for £10 less than I paid for it to a woman who took it to festivals. I liked that thought. Bought my current stereo with the proceeds in 1998.
Couldn't agree with you more about helping out your family. Nan is 88 and lives in a bungalow 30 yards from her DD and Son-I-L and Mum and Dad come over for several hours every Saturday to visit and do stuff, DD is in and out all day. She'll never be one of those poor souls left alone to rot. We also talk on the phone regularly but, due to lack of car and pants public transport, I can't get to see her easily (village) so tie it in with a visit to Mum and Dad which I do every 6 weeks or so. She's my sole-surviving grandparent; Nan to 4 and Great Nan to 2. Loveliest woman you could meet, pillar of the British Legion and her church (the rest of us are heathen-ish tho!)
Even my Cousin C, who is a selfish moo by anybody's standards, loves our Nan and is taking her out weekend after this one on a Mystery Trip..........Even I don't know where they're going.
Nan has grumbled (good-naturedly) to me that she mustn't even mention anywhere in anyone's hearing that she might like such and such or it'll be with her in days.
kidkat Glad to see you've posted on Praise Vent etc about that IKEA business. It's unbelievable what they think they can get away with.
softstuff and larumbelle ((big hugs)) with those health problems. I've been thru the mill to a degree myself so can hazard a guess at where you may be, mentally. Bon courage, mes amies, bon courage.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Just wanted to send some hugs to all that could do with one xx
I'm also going to be missing in action for a week as off to "sunny" glencoe with DH, DS, my mum and dad and very very excited step grandsons, dear knows what i had drunk when i booked this for all of us:rotfl:.
Anywho have a lovely week and hope there is an abundance of good news or at least no bad news for all xxxMoving towards a life that is more relaxed and kinder to the environment (embracing my inner hippy:D) .:j0 -
Sorry but I think that is quite rude.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, that what makes this forum so great, and your opinion and experience of living near a campus is a good one, other people may not have the same experience.
There is certainly no need to remark on anyones upbringing or the opportunities they have been afforded or denied.
Couldn't agree more Kimitatsu- the reason this forum is successful is whilst we may not all agree with each others opinions we do respect them and we would like to keep it that way. Another one for the "ignore list".
Been to Asda for the weekly shop - had to buy custard for a trifle I'm making (well I could have made the custard but no time) and was horrified at the cost of Ambrosia - 98p a tin:eek: so the trifle is having Asda's own custard at 30p. What a difference!
When I got to the till there was a teenage girl packing bags, she was raising money for a trip to Bolivia. I was happy to give her a donation but I so wanted to say "here is a £1 but please don't pack my bags". Tins on top of fruit, newspaper rolled up and so on but when she was squeezing the life out of my bread to fit it in a corner of a bag I did have to say if you want to just leave it i'll finish it off.
Does anyone else really dislike someone else packing their bags or am I just a control freak??
Anyway off to start on some of the food for tomorrow's party - I'm now making summer fruits cheesecake and grasshopper pie as well as pavlova and trifle. I haven't even thought about the salad side of things yet:o At least the birthday cake is decorated now so I can ignore it, I did finish it off with a very light scattering of edible glitter so I'm very pleased with my efforts (despite cheating and buying sugar flowers). I may even post a picture - that remins me the camera battery will need charged - off to do that now!0 -
wouldn`t it be lovely if the world was full of positivity from talkative people
so easy to be negative don`t you think?0 -

We are all well aware that a much higher proportion of peeps are going onto University these days - some deserved, some <cough> not...
