To get back to the fish debate...
I asked in Sainsbugs yesterday about Basa and gave all the alternative names as well and was told that they don't sell it from the fresh fish counter and I couldn't find any frozen or prepacked so it might be policy. I know they sell cod and some other things that are on danger lists but its always line caught and the cod is often from managed Icelandic stocks (if you're not boycotting Iceland over Whaling issues). They also don't sell swordfish, dogfish or shark.
Please though if you don't like what you see on the fish counters anywhere, tell them. Our voice as consumers is pretty strong but we often don't use it.
The bite back campaign got shark taken off the fish counters in most of the big supermarkets and its disappearing from restaurants as well so it is possible.:)

Grey Queen Can't you get the bath to the lottie and use it for water storage ? We have three in our veg. plot and they're a good height to fill the watering can from. Hold lots too.0

Tempting idea but not one for me; can't move a tub on my pushbike and prefer vertical barrels as they take up much less room on the lottie. Did think that I needed a farmer-friend who wanted them for a water trough, tho!
Have had a tiring day so will do a wee whoopsie-hunt then be at home for the plumber from 4 pm.
Good to see you back, Softstuff and ((hugs)) to anyone who feels in need.
Oh, I wash my feather pillow at Mum's because she has a tumbler drier (used about twice a year if that) and I don't. We tumble it on low heat for a couple of hours and finish it up on a clothes airer/ outside line, shaking a few times to keep the filling moving.
Lots of good tips from the other ladies about the washing. I have emptied a pillow and laundered the feathers and made a fresh pillowslip and its such a PITA it will take a few weeks off your life expectancy in sheer Grrrrr!!!!-ness IYSWIM.
EDIT: came home and bath tub has disappeared so either Wombles, Farmers or the Fly-Tipping SWAT Team. Result.
I have a sore throat and think I'm going down with the lurgy. What a drag.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

the toilet keeps flushing even after it should have stopped, is this likely to be a ballcock issue or something else?
Sounds like a ballcock* issue in my limited experience. I managed to fix mine, which means it's pretty darn idiotproof to do! I just used a chopstick to hold it up so the tank didn't refill, took the broken bit out, went to the hardware shop, showed it to the man, bought the new little plastic thingy that had gone, put it all together again, popped it in the cistern, and all was well. And if that sounds like I have no idea what I'm talking about, it's because I DON'T!!!
*I believe we're supposed to call them float valves now. "Ballcock" sounds too much like naughty parts. :rotfl: Though the hardware shop man may have been having me on. Ballcocks to him if he was!0 -
thanks for the window quilt links Annie 123 - very interesting. Our worst offenders in the window stakes are the front room - Crittall windows (loads of leaky leaded joints from small panes and metal frames) in a north facing room with a large void beneath the floorboards and a chimney.....fffffffreeeeezing! we've got a wood burner in there but rarely use the room so don't burn it much. At the moment I've got wooden slatted blinds and heavy interlined linen curtains in there, but i might consider the window quilts at some point - not sure how I would make it work - I like the slatted blinds for privacy and ventilation for the condensation river that forms in there - maybe I could fit the quilts on the inside of the frames so that there is window - blind - quilt - curtain
hmmmmm - off to ponder.......0 -
Thank you for all of these references and for your description; just wanted to check, when you added shower curtain and mylar sheet, did they go on the outside of the quilt next to the glass or did they go inside the quilt behind the
cotton sheet backing?
Top sheet, then blanket, then vapour barrier, then backing.
Mylar sheet went through the sewing machine, shower curtain wouldn't, so stitched it by hand. I have a very basic sewing machine. My old tredle foot one would take anything.
I'm going to add another wadding/fleece/something warm layer after the vapour barrier too for the next ones, just to see if an extra layer makes a bigger difference as some of the professional ones have 5 layers.
That's if it will go through my sewing machine of course.
I was telling the Canadian neighbour about posting here and she's seen them made with newspapers for wadding. Vapour barrier essential as the ink comes off!
Think I'll give that one a miss;)0 -

The car sounded like a tank so had no choice.

So... I have my grievance hearing a week today. I'm freaking out already. I had reason to speak to a few people from work today - all being overly nice to me. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. I've applied for another three jobs though, anyway, including one at Dunelm Mill (walked around it in interests of research. Nothing cheap enough to actually buy).
I had to do my meat shop at M&S again today, because I have vouchers and I'd rather use them and save the cash. If you stick to the offers it's actually not that dear. OH and I just had 'that' talk. You know, the how the heck are we going to cope next month talk. The how is it I'm working every hour dog sends and still have no money to do this and that and why do I always have to be He-Man talk. The how is it I've got a job and I'm willing and able to do it but they won't let me talk. Voices didn't get raised or anything. It really was just talking. I feel so rotten for him. That's the worst bit of all this, that I feel so blooming useless and it all feels so unfair on him. He's working six days again this week and really he just needs a few days off to rest and recover
But anyway - I know things could be worse and hopefully they will be a lot better soon. Huuuuge :grouphug: to everyone who needs and wants one xx0 -
Larumbelle - it's good that you can talk with your OH like that and that both of you feel able to voice your frustrations without it escalating into something worse.
You will have support with you when you have your hearing won't you? Have you chosen someone and discussed what might happen and the topics to be covered? - to quote a former colleague "Proper Planning Prevents P!ss Poor Performance". And do you know anyone who has been to such a hearing before and can give you some pointers? Good luck with it all - maybe this is the beginning of something good
What have the doctors/hospital said about the condition you've been left in? From what you've shared it seems as though they've washed their hands of the effect of their P!ss Poor Performance"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -
Larumbelle - positive thoughts for you for next week. I hope it all works out ok and you get the best outcome for you.
A big thank you to westlothianlass and stiltwalker for your pesto suggestions: I had a yummy tea of pasta with broad bean and sunflower seed pesto.
And Lizzyb1812 - I can't wait to try the basil propagation. I love the idea of getting more basil effectively for nothing:)
I agree with something mardatha said earlier - I reckon being able to cook from scratch and make tasty meals from basic ingredients is going to be more important than ever in the next wee while.0
