I'm not sure what to say. It's so awful the way your flatmate has been treated. Have employers always been this bad, or is just they've got the attitude that staff are disposable with the way unemployment is right now?

I'm so clumsy at trying to get out what I mean. I know how you feel about being washed up but hang in there, things will get better. I know how you feel about how many more times, but stay strong, you know you can get through as you have before, we are all here for you and to try and help to keep your chin up. I don't have many friends IRL either, the ones I do have I don't really relate to in the way I do to people on here. Without getting into beliefs and all the rest of it, sometimes stuff just happens. Good things don't happen to good people and bad things don't happen to bad people. None of it is your fault.

Oh Reverbe, what an absolute bummer :(. I'm sure someone on here will know enough about employment law to be able to advise you better than I can.

You WILL get through this and you know you can always come and cry on our shoulders here

    Hugs

Reverbe how awful, I dont know what to say, except "tomorrow is another day" it might help somehow.
GreyQueen your "Every Pounds a Prisoner" is absolutely inspired. I find myself saying it when I'm out shopping. Its a great de-spending phrase.
  • thanks for all the info on basa fish, we have some in the freezer but i think it will be going in the bin now :( hate waste but eugh, we won't be eating that!!!

just as we are getting ourselves sorted the car decides it's going to play funny beggers with us and an indicator light has gone and the back box thingy from the exhaust has fallen off, luckily we don't use the car that much now as we can only afford £30 a month petrol, but if it was winter and we were relying on the car a bit more then i would be mightily peeved with it - just as i was this afternoon, having to do the school run in the rain :( luckily we got a lift home from a friend :A so DD didn't get wet :)
a quick call to the garage and me making it sound like i knew what i was talking about, and fingers crossed it will only cost £15-20 to be welded back on
hoping and praying that it can be welded back on and we don't have to fork out for a new one as that would seriously eat into our budget :(

add to that our tax credits have gone down by £2 a week - not a lot i know but when your on such a tight budget it is

right off to go and supervise DD making our tea - she is only 5 and wants to make tea for me and daddy :) :A she is making tuna, sweetcorn and pasta for us :) she is having something completely different though as she won't eat it!!!!!!!!!! lol

Er, sorry to jump in here but someone has just mentioned my favourite fish - basa. Please, what the hell am I eating??!!!

    http://www.worldwildlife.org/what/globalmarkets/aquaculture/WWFBinaryitem8612.pdf

WWF doesn't say not to eat it - they just say to be careful about it's source so as not to encourage destructive farming methods

"Has anyone got any ideas what I could use instead of pine nuts to have a go at making some pesto? I was going to try walnuts, but other suggestions greatfully received."

Walnuts are good with very strong herbs such as sage but for others cashews are good because they have a mild and creamy flavour which doesn't outshine herbs such as basil

I was at our local farm shop about a week ago and I popped into the butchers on the site which is only open on Friday and Saturday as they do a farmer's market on Sunday, so I usually miss it.

I saw that they did local grass fed lamb and beef which they raise on a local farm (not the one the farm shop I use is part of) but I didn't need anything, so I just took a flyer. We were out for the day the following week and we were close to their actual farm near Rochester which also has a farm shop so I suggested we call in to get some meat. I was chatting to the farm manager and asked him what it was they did that made them fall short of being organic because they said that they used homeopathic remedies and no GM feed etc etc. He explained that you have to jump through all the hoops to get certified organic status and you can be denied it even if you don't spray your own fields if a neighbouring farmer sprays his.

He then showed us round the farm and I have never seen such good looking beef cows. They were a cross between Aberdeen Angus and some other breed which escapes me. They were in a large pen with access to a field and a bit of shelter and when they saw us they came ambling up to be stroked (or looking for more food) and they had amazingly glossy coats and seemed the picture of health. The lambs were in another field and close to the farm shop were two enclosures each with a cockerel and his harem chuntering away looking busy - so we bought some free range eggs as well. The meat was lovely - he explained that they hang their beef for three weeks on average.

It wasn't the cheapest but the prices were about the same as Waitrose Farm assured. So it's worth looking out for butchers like that if you go to a farmer's market ie "all but organic" because you don't get the high prices that come with organic but you get the assurance of good meat and high welfare standards.
