I agree with this wholeheartedly. You have no idea of what the story is behind the dresses and hats and smiles at Ascot. It could be a treat for a mother or a birthday like Cat described earlier. It could be a promotion or business opportunity for milliners or designers bringing much needed money into our country. It could be that its a last chance opportunity for a woman with cancer or life limiting illness. You absolutely have no idea what brought that woman to Ascot. I love to look at the bright colours and wonderful dresses - its much better than the doom and gloom.

Eh!! I hope this wasn`t aimed at me and also redlady re jealousy. I am not at all jealous and tbh I could easily go and withdraw some savings and buy the clothes and go. I was simply pointing out that the divide does still exist, having seen several of the interviews on tv. However it is my choice to live carefully so that I can still provide for my old age and not be a burden on my children or on the tax payer in the future

Re tax and my in law, he does investigations into some of the biggest brand names and high street businesses in the uk, not the hard working `rich` person. The public have no idea really about how very much is `hidden` from tax by their very clever multinational accountants

I'm not sure it is jealousy per say I think it's more envy 'if only... just for one day' etc.

No you don't know, that's what I am saying and why I used an example about my family and in-law's situation :)

Jealousy is a very unattractive emotion.

Personally - I certainly agree with getting a freezer - particularly in view of you living up the top of a hill/costs of fares/etc. Hopefully also there will be surplus produce to freeze from the garden:)

I wouldnt get this particular one on Ebay though if I were you. I dont like the sound of that hole in the bottom and I interpreted the bit re what its like cosmetically as "tatty".

I think you are best waiting for a better one to come up - I dont expect it will take long before one does so. So - I would say "hang on in there and you will get one without a hole and hopefully better looking as well".

Have you tried Freecycle/Freegle in your area?

It may be possible to get more produce than you bargained on from the garden too:). I'm currently reading a book on vertical gardening that someone on MSE (think it might have been this thread?) recommended and there was stuff in there that was new to me. Like growing rainbow chard in a strawberry barrel and his photo indicated that it produced a whole lotta chard. Also liked the idea of a potato/tomato plant (ie its basically a tomato plant with potatoes in the soil instead of normal tomato roots iyswim). He gets that by grafting a tomato plant into a potato and planting that basically and I thought "Brilliant idea - provided I can make sure I can tell the difference between tomato fruit and potato fruit - which I would imagine is easy enough" (tomato fruit being edible and potato fruit isnt...). Two lots of food out of one bit of ground:).

I am now thinking of coloured jars, someone mentioned deep puple and so on to keep the light out. Now that is a very good idea as glass can be painted. I used to have glass painting stuff (qvc what else) and could have made lovely designs on glass. My mind is working overtime here, a row of these could be a fantastic feature in an otherwise functional kitchen. Trouble is that my floor is stone but I suppose that they could be used for non-everyday items. Imagine a row of these in purples, reds, orange etc

Dh has just gone away for a sporty weekend and I am going to set to and clear the understairs cupboard later. He is as good as gold and has cleared his cupboard so I can move 2 suitcases in there. I am trying my hardest to revamp my food and basics storage, it isn`t easy

I just saw the bit about chard. It is such an easy grower and I have grown it for years. In my experience the white chard grows so much better than the red stemmed. I picked a load the other day and it takes no effort to grow and is pretty well pest free. It would be one of my top must haves if I had no garden room

That was me - I think coloured glass is fantastic and I want wine and purple and bottle greens. But I suppose I'd still drop the bloody things.
I put in a whole pkt of chard seeds and they have been lost in the mists of time. or the scottish summer. Gone forever.

Sammy Kaye I agree with ceridwen it does look tatty and I would be worried about the hole too.
I would try freecycle before ebay as well.
I love my chest freezer (It was £319 just before Christmas) but it can be akward to keep organised so I have boxes inside for different things eg chicken, beef, veggies, etc and I know exactly where everything is
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

That was my point. My friends went. Travelled first class, had champers, new frocks etc etc. It is their day out once a year. Not everyone who was there has a cool million sat in a bank account. My point was that there have even been posts on here about someone getting a payrise and someone else not and being jealous of it! I remember with the Waitrose conversation one poster said she didnt like to say she shopped there because of the reaction.

I know some very wealthy people but they have had to pay a high price for that wealth. Not least my OH who paid the ultimate price by losing his wife. The only good thing is that his attitude towards money has now changed. They are the ones who work 18 hours a day 7 days a week for years, miss out on their family life, wife, childs first steps. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

"Rich" can be defined in so many ways. I consider myself rich because I have a great family, health and a job.

Tax evasion is illegal. Tax avoidance isnt.

I would have a look on freecycle as there are often freezers on there. The other place I would have a look is ebay. You may be able to pick up a cheap one.

very well said. Money doesn't make people happy, but we should also be careful about making the kind of judgements about those who have a lot of money that would be considered unacceptable here if they were about people who have none. Prejudice is unattractive however it manifests itself. I try, and hope I generally succeed, in accepting people for who they are, not what they have or don't have, and accepting their differences where their values may differ from mine. The world would be a very dull place if we were all the same.
