There's a head teacher I knew who fought so hard to get a wind turbine in his school, when it was proposed that there would be turbines where he lived he opposed the plans wholeheartedly. I lost respect for him from that day on. It didn't sit right with me and I certainly didn't understand it.

on a separate note (as I'm a boring twerp with nothing better to do) there's 236 people viewing Oldstyle at the moment - the most of any section on MSE at this time. Is that normal or a sign of these times where more and more people need to find out how to cut right back?

Just thought I would pop in and share a link to a site I found.http://www.mynewoldschool.com/

It covers quite a lot of the topics that we oldstylers discuss. One article grabbed me, the how much land would you need to grow your years food. I think it relates to traditional planting though and not raised bed gardening which if I remember rightly uses about 1/4 of the land to grow the same amounts.

Interesting to read what people think about the noise and spectacle of wind turbines.
I remember thinking that, when the motor car first became popular, there must have been an awful lot of people who wished they would just go away again and stop disrupting the peace and beauty of the land.
I still do think that myself quite often .
One mans progress is another mans vandalism.:o

;)Hi Dubgirl unfortunately i do think food prices etc will carry on increasing i no longer take this for granted especially as recently almost every time i do a food shop i find a product that has gone up and to be honest it makes me jump a bit like when you got a big spider in the bath im beginning to no longer enjoy food shopping never know whats going to happen next. Hi mrs vegplot yes i forgot about RaRA dresses were nt they pretty to ? and pencil skirts your mum sounds a lovely mum like mine my mum use to knit us alot of warm jumpers for winter were nt mums clever?. In the fridge iv got a 1.40packet of lean mince from tesco and i have bought a great big sack of desiree spuds from farm shop for 3 pounds these are all different size potatoes so for tea tonight going to make a shepherds pie make everyone feel nice comfort food.i have bought a lot of 20p packets of spaghetti to store and carrying on keep stocking up to be honest i just dont fancy the idea of being hungry so thats it im going to be busy.

You can't go wrong if you stock up. Power cuts, floods, strikes, bad weather, any of them might affect the food supply now with the way things are organised. And if nothing else, then you get it before the price goes up :)

This is such a stupid question but: Having stocked up - does everyone then run their supplies down, or do you make sure you always have the same amount stored (so everytime you use one you replace it)?

I'm just waiting for the nice people to come and do our (free:D) cavity wall insulation. I hope it makes a big difference.

I dont think this is a stupid question, I would love to know everyones opinion because my DH thinks I am worrying too much and will end up spending more money than I need.

DH thinks I am mad wanting a stock of at least a dozen toilet rolls and few boxes of washing powder.

Thought if I bought extra packs of value pasta, rice, biscuits, some tins of beans and tomatoes and breakfast cereals they would soon mount up without breaking the bank.

Would love to hear any other suggestions for my (as yet) empty stock bookcase!!

I don't stockpile, I keep what I consider "enough" which differs for different products. I make sure new stuff goes at the back of the shelf so we're always using the oldest products. Then I just replace each product as we use it. I generally buy enough of whatever it is to last between special offers. So some things I buy once a year, other things I buy every 3 months when the offer somes round again.
