Was very annoyed when I picked Ds up from work today at Mr M - they were selling the sliced roast beef at 39p instead of 3.48 and 3 people were hogging it all and I mean 8 bags each. One woman I described to Ds goes every week and says she is having a kiddies birthday party and stands there till things are reduced. Ds isnt stupid and asked her one week how the party went? A very red faced woman scuttled off. I only wanted 1 pack and stood my ground till I got it. Also got a french stick for 19p so that was tea sorted. Apparently Mr M is putting a lot of prices up tomorrow . I know whoopsies are a bonus but people are so greedy.

Got to do a big baking session this week as we have nothing to nibble on! Don't know if I have the energy but needs must.

Another wet miserable day here, had to sit in with Dgs when all i wanted to do was take him to the park. But we found lots to do, making noise and doing puzzles (cs of course courtesy of my mum).
Tomato plants looking good considering the weather but have a few indoors as a safety net. Actually had 6 mange tout in the stir fry last night - Yay me harvest time:rotfl:

Hex & Grey Queen Thanks for clarifying what water can and can't be used for my plants :)
I think I may stick to veg water. We all pretty much shower all the time. We don't bath often because of being on a meter, but we do like a nice amount of bubble bath in the water when we do allow ourselves the luxury of one.

The rankness of my collected veggie water will be due to the fact that I'm storing the water in empty 4 pinter milk bottles with the tops on then :o so thanks for that GC

My greenhouse stands on paving (as my whole garden is paved) and I appear to have an ant problem. There have always been ants where it stands but I didn't think they'd do any harm to the plants until I read that they bring in aphids because they feed on the honeydew that aphids produce. So, does anyone have any tips for getting rid of both please?

The aphids I have no problem in killing - IYKWIM - but I don't really want to kill the ants, as I think they're truly amazing insects. Does anyone know of a cheap deterrent?

I sprayed the aphids tonight with ¼ tsp of washing up liquid diluted in 500ml of water - is that strong enough to sort the aphids out?

I also read that semolina will get rid of ants because they carry it back to the queen who can't digest it and therefore, er :o explodes, which sounds rather gross but encourages the colony to move on. Can anyone suggest a less extreme treatment?......peferrably something that I may already have in the home?

As a treat I made this RED PEPPER, FETA & OLIVE FRITTATA for our tea last night (minus the olives).
Totally lush, although not cheap with peppers the price they are, so wont be able to afford to make it very often...or at least not out of season. I do hope - if I can get rid of the aphids - that my plants produce some as I love peppers and use them in a lot of dishes.

Am awake at silly oclock as [STRIKE]todays[/STRIKE] yesterdays crisis in the house moving saga was a hamster escape - well I say escape actually DS7 released DS13 hamster into the abyss (dining room)! Having spent most of day searching, I gave up and promised a late night search. So I woke at three and located hamster within ten mins - safely returned to cage - hungry and very thirsty.

Today the plants will be relocated to new house - just hoping they like it and flourish.
As for watering plants - we have had loads of rain so its not been a problem but when we do need tp water them I save all the water from running taps to hot and vice versa - it takes a good two litres of water every time you want to get hot running water from a tap here that adds up to so much waste if i dont save it. I find that by saving that water I can easily water everything with what would only run away.

Arggh, the rain is missing us and moving NE (meteogroup) omg that will mean the cereal farmers are in very big trouble (and the consequences are dire).
  • Hippeechiq, ants hate cinnamon, so that might be worth a try? They don't particularly like bleach either, lol. Last year, I came home from work to an ant infestation - eek - they came in under the front door. I drizzled ground cinnamon around the door and a tissue with some bleach on in the corner where I thought they were entering. The ants said goodbye and went elsewhere.
Call me what you like, I was a bit "tiddly" when I chose my username

lovebargainshatewaste - thanks for the cinnamon tip

Hippeechiq - I had no idea that ants transport aphids from plant to plant. I did know they "milked" them for the honeydew. Have just read that ants will fight ladybirds to protect their aphids!!!

Slinks in - knowing my remedies for ants include things like boiling water and hoovering them up:o.

I have had several "house invasions" from ants before now - but thankfully (fingers crossed) they've stopped coming in and I've not spotted a single one out t'back since I took down some climbing plants I had growing up the walls. Those plants must have been "home city" for them and now they're gone the ants have gone from the premises as well.:)

Ah Ceridwen - your always keeping an eye on me. ;) like a little guardian :A I think I have a fair few of them on these boards now.

Well we are officially in our house - the last thing to come up today is the terrapins cabinet and then I have to go back down tonight and mop/bleach the place and that is it - the keys for the flat are handed in tomorrow. :D
My kitchen is pretty much sorted
The dining room was sorted until Owen brought all his parts from the flat up and they are now taking over but hoping once I have washing sorted and things sorted upstairs that I can box up a fair bit tidily and cover them with a blanket or tea towel to 'hide' them.
Living room is done - and the computer is up and running now. Thank goodness - was starting to get withdrawal symptoms from it and my competitions!
Hollys cot is up and the walls decorated, I did a make do and reuse type thing in her room in that everything has come from Bens old room - so she now has his purple carpet, green curtains and winnie the pooh stickarounds on the wall, with matching lampshade. We are on the mattress in her room at the minute until I can tackle our bedroom.
The terrapins are currently in Holly baby bath in the bathroom because their cabinet is not yet up here and I couldn't bare to leave them behind!
Garden - I am thinking about some giant tubs for planting my veggies in. I have two hydrangea bushes - one is being savaged by bind weed so thinking I may remove that and put a few concrete slabs down in its place so I can keep my pots there. Owen is already digging shed foundations!
Apart from that the only downfall I can see is that I have 2 cupboards in the kitchen which I can allocate to food storage and it is not alot of space so Im thinking the weird cubby hole cupboard that is upstairs in my bedroom - its probably about 3ft square so hardly a wardrobe - might need some shelving added and then it could be a perfect pantry :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Have applied for a warm front grant too being as I now have a loft! Havent actually been up into the loft yet :( but figured I could double check as they'd have it on record if they have done work here already - and figure it might help me get a new boiler jacket too as I currently don't have one!
Hoping this house will help reduce our energy bills considerably too as we have an electric shower so shouldn't need the gas on too much as it will literally be for cooking and heating.
Fingers crossed the gas man will come tomorrow though as we still have no gas! :eek:cant wait to start cooking in my new kitchen!

Apart from that not much else has happened - Benjamin is now 7 - was his birthday on thursday just gone and now Owens birthday is the next one.
Very sad Ive already been planning where my christmas decorations are goign to go and planning a moneysaving made at home Xmas

Right Im off before you all hang me - am back properly online now so looking forward to posting more regularly again now!
    Time to find me again
