Why has tinned corned beef shot up in price ? ? None in our Aldi for weeks now - Basics is now up to £1.47 and Princes brand up to £2.46 at our local Sainsbugs

Can't wait for the allotment to start producing veggies as prices around here are getting beyond a joke - £1.99 for 4 sticks of rhubarb. Even cooking from scratch, its getting even more of a challenge every week to stay in budget.

    Workhouse here we come . . . .

I get very confused about pot marigolds which I think are Calendula and are edible in salads plus they are good for sore skin if you make an infusion. They are different from marigolds proper which (again I think) are Tagetes.

Part of the reason I get confused is that when my elder DD had really bad veruccas - literally they just mushroomed all over her feet - my chiropodist, who is interested in alternative medicine used a sort of black paste made from marigolds to heal them - and it worked! Took ages and she had to have her feet bandaged so it formed a poultice (though she was able to have showers and just let the poultice dry afterwards) but she was terrified of conventional treatment and TBH they were so bad I don't think she would have been able to walk if they had been treated with acid or cut out. But I have always associated skin treatments with calendula not marigolds proper.

    I'm sure Ceridwen will know

TBH - I am not that clear on the different types of marigold myself - after a foraging walk in which our guide pointed out some "municipal garden" ones and said "...and NOT them...." (as in "Dont eat those ones"). Memory a bit vague on that point - but think 'twas what I think of as the really "fluffy" ones she was indicating caution on.

    Anyways - from my "library":

Marigold (calendula officinalis) is what gets used for medicinal purposes - for cracked skin, cuts, insect bites, sunburn, mouth infections, fighting off infection caused by viruses and parasite.

    Historically speaking:
    - Middle Ages - was then used for intestinal problems, smallpox, measles, conjunctivitis, burns, eczema

    - American Civil War - they treated open wounds with it.

So - I wouldnt be surprised if a therapist had found some info. somewheres (probably in historical books) to the effect that it would deal with veruccas.

Calendula officinalis (pot marigold) - one can use the leaves and petals for culinary purposes. When dried the flowers can be used in cakes and soups in much the same way as saffron.

Anyways - you should find detailed info somewheres on:

  • My I join. My husband is being made redundant at the beginning of May and it may take him awhile to find another one. Is there a summary of tips on the old threads?

Hi Rachel, I, too am fairly new to the old style boards (came via debt-free wannabe) but old-style living is the way I want to go, firstly to be debt-free, to then stay out of debt and to become far less materialistic.

I hope you get some good news on the job front for hubbie. Its such a worry.

I too would have loved some sort of summary of the old-style threads but have plodded though reading them, its become my new obbession (much cheaper and more fun than shopping!!). I got MSE Guide to Old Stlye Thrift from the library and found that a great start, loads of great money saving tips.

    Good luck :rotfl:

    Hi guys

Hope everyones doing ok I do worry about the economy.

Growth figures ok but think consumer spending/confidence low the average family does not feel as ifs things improving as inflation so high but bank of england comboned with cuts very reluctant to move interest rates.

Was enjoying that supescrimpers programme as some os tips but thedaft annoying families annoy me easy to save if you

spend 90quid a week on kids clothes
    take taxis everywhere
    talk on phone constantly
weekly shop at the blooming spar!

I cant see any easy cutbacks for us to make.

As martin used to say on his programmes there painful and pain free savings.

Sadly might have to get more painful rang sky they unhelpful and useless as ever!

    Hubby promised to reveiw insurance.

I totally agree about Superscrimpers, was really looking forward to it but so disappointed that it really doesnt help people like us who have already cut right back, will keep watching it just in case.

I am still plodding through DS last years summer clothes and putting them on e-bay.

Cut my shopping budget from £60 to £50 per week (three of us at home), hope to cut to £40 in next few weeks, meal planning is a great way to save some pennies.

Myself, DH and DS had a old-style Royal wedding day, made lovelyfood and got cosy on sofa together (perfect).

Good luck Gailey, what a busy girl you are at mo! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    'morning all...

before I hie me hence to finish up yesterdays springcleaning - I might just let myself have a little browse of:

    http://household.zero-credit.co.uk/

Always wondering if theres any further moneysaving tips I can pick up - as I've had hundreds of £s of unexpected expenses so far this year (picked up another £150 or so worth just in the last week....) and had to bring forward a planned purchase (of about £1,000 worth) recently. Walks off muttering "Should be better of by now...should be better off....." but reassures self that the only way I could have done any avoiding of any of that unexpected expense was if I'd bought a better-quality example of one of those things in the first place (then it wouldnt have worn out way too quickly...).

    See youse later...maybe..

Bit tired lately, never seem to get round to what I want to do.
Shop prices getting hellish and the petrol to get there even worse. I like Asda online shop but the RV always whines that something's missing. If you choose an 8hour delivery slot then its £2.50. We worked out that petrol to go into the shop and get it would cost us £6.75.
Wishing like hell we could win the lottery this week, having never any money grinds you down at times eh ? I need to get outside in the sun and listen to the birds and straighten my face before it sticks like this :D

    Good morning,
I have just spent ages trying to catch up. Very interesting to read about calendula. Shall look for some seeds to sprinkle around.

We now do need some serious overnight rain for the baby veggies. The yellow ball has come back to play today, it has been missing for the last few days.

Perpetual spinach is bolting at the moment, so I think it needs watering.

Just heard that there are new laws in force about selling herbal remedies. Hope my response to the first sign of a cold in DH or me is not affected!

Anyhow, getting on time I think, Cheers m'dears, Silver

There's a long list of contenders for that Lottery win Mardatha - darn it...

<praying smilie> - I only need enough to be where I expected to be by now Universe...honest...not being greedy...

(stage whisper - "do you think THAT will work?")

Goes off still muttering visibly - about "What was the point of all those years of deferred gratification and having got to the age where one is supposed to start reaping the rewards of that - but the rewards seem to be missing still?....."

I do wonder if a lot of the peeps that currently expect to "get their nose down to that grindstone"/plan their lives/ scrimp and scrape/etc/etc will decide "Darn this...might as well have a live for the day philosophy if the 'expected rewards' for doing so are turning up very late..if at all...anyway...". Wonders how we will maintain a stable society if the connection gets broken between "grindstone...deferred gratification" now and "rewards later" if peeps start perceiving that the "rewards later" may not happen....
