I get very confused about pot marigolds which I think are Calendula and are edible in salads plus they are good for sore skin if you make an infusion. They are different from marigolds proper which (again I think) are Tagetes.
Part of the reason I get confused is that when my elder DD had really bad veruccas - literally they just mushroomed all over her feet - my chiropodist, who is interested in alternative medicine used a sort of black paste made from marigolds to heal them - and it worked! Took ages and she had to have her feet bandaged so it formed a poultice (though she was able to have showers and just let the poultice dry afterwards) but she was terrified of conventional treatment and TBH they were so bad I don't think she would have been able to walk if they had been treated with acid or cut out. But I have always associated skin treatments with calendula not marigolds proper.
I'm sure Ceridwen will knowIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I got "oakleaf" variety of really early lettuc (from realseeds) and they are doing very well. Usually I can't grow lettuce but these are in cut down 6pint milk containers, got 4 of them at various stages and the biggest are 4" and look like real lettuce already. I just move them around from shade to sun (the containers in the garden) at random times and they seem to be doing well.0

I've got everything crossed for you, Sammy-Kaye and I've just lit a candle for you as well. It will work, IT JUST WILL.0

Calendula is used in anything to do with healing the skin and as far as I know, its pot marigold, but not 100% sure. It's fabulous stuff though for wounds and cuts and skin eruptions of any kind.0

I'm sure Ceridwen will knowI think the pot marigolds, aka English marigolds, are Calendula and the petals are edible. Don't know about the leaves, they're always a bit sticky, but I'm no herbalist. I've remembered the name of my little bushy marigolds; tagetes Golden Gem. They make lovely little "hedges" around beds or paths, set oddles of seed which is easy to gather so once you have some, you'll never need to buy another packet.
You can also eat nastutium leaves (assuming the critters leave you any) and I have been known to raise eyebrows by smacking a leaf into a sandwich; they're peppery and go nicely with cheese. You can also garnish a salad with nasturtium flowers and eat them.
Mardatha those oak leaf lettuces are little troopers, they do very well for me, too. I just pull off as many leaves as I want. One thing I have noticed about lettuces and cabbages is, that where you have "red" and "white" varieties growing together, the reddish ones are avoided by the caterpillars. Don't know the science behind it, just my on the spot observation. Perhaps they have more tannins, are a touch more bitter?
Sometimes lettuces can be a beggar to grow in summer because they don't like it too hot and being in full sun, so maybe that's the problem some people have?Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

This post by anguk has a good link for lavender furniture polish...is that the one you were thinking of?
PinkI've just done a fairly extensive Google and the link from Pink is the best. They all seem to use Lavender essential oil, and a hundred and fifty pounds of lavender only yields one pound of essential oil.
Thank you both: that is indeed the thread I was thinking of :T
I could swear someone just asked me for beans, but the post seems to have disappeared. Anyway, feel free to pm if it was you!0 -
Phew!
I didn't log on for a few days and suddenly there's a new thread and I've had loads to read
Someone said something about crab apples - last year I made loads of jelly from some in a park near us and added finely sliced chilli to some and it was fantastic:DI was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly

Thanks Mardatha, I could not grow lettuce in my garden cos of the superslugs but the milk container idea sounds perfect and will hang on the wall. I hope your ds's op goes well and that he is up and about soon.
I cannot beleive that this country has come to almost a complete standstill. I wandered off to the local library - shut! and the Cs. Should have sent Oh fishing yesterday, he has found a superduper disabled fishing place, nearer and cheaper so I packed his picnic and all his medical bits and bobs and off he went.
GQ I think the meeces have had a feast on my extra pea seeds that I planted round the established plants, serves me right when I back onto a cemetery full of field miceSo going to pop some more in the greenhouse, no doubt they will all suddenly pop up and I will be eating peas for ever, i dont mind really.
Isnt it great our new thread, seems to have got better and better with lots of new people and old faces re-appearing. We certainly need the support don't we. just popped in Mr T for some baby wipes and its scary looking at the prices.
