Artex ceiling

One very important thing to bear in mind before you any sort of ripping it down etc is how old is the house and approx age of the artex ?
Old artex used to have asbestos fibres in it to help as a binding agent so it is upmost importance that if its pre 2000 DO NOT BREAK the artex.
They stopped putting asbestos in Artex by 1984 (may have been 1981). Allowing for old stock I would say any house built from 1990 onwards will not have asbestos in the artex.
Only white asbestos (chrysotile) was used in artex and it was generally in low quantities but the percentage can vary. Only really dangerous if you start sanding it off or disturbing it vigorously.
Also, not all artex before 1984 contained asbestos. Only way to be sure is to get it tested.0 -
We got rid of the artex in our bathroom last year by getting someone to put plasterboard on all the walls and ceiling and then plastering the lot smooth. We were advised it was quicker and safer to do it this way than to try sanding down the artex then skimming. It probably depends on the condition of the artex and how deep the pattern is.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:wave:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX0
