Digital Camcorder???

I'm looking to get a digital camcorder for a present and haven't got a clue about them! I want a digital one that I can get a decent quality movie with and then easily transfer it onto my pc for editing/burning.Can anyone translate some of the jargon for me and give me some hints as of where to start as I'm going round in circles here on google!!!

    Hi Jamsey
If you have kids, then get a good optical zoom as you get more lifelike antics when they dont realise you are filming them. If you are OK with the cables from the camcorder to the TV then you can get a DV tape one which are very cheap now, if it's easier then go for a DVD loaded one but they are little lager, but you can take it out and put it straight into a DVD player, and then load it to PC to edit at your leisure. Latest format is with a HDD, holds more, but again needs leads to connect to TV and/or PC. Mine's a Canon DV tape type and I am happy with it, it comes with Studio 8 to edit with, which I have found OK. Hope this simplified basic info helps.

How does this one look to anyone in the know???

Looking for one under £200 if possible and after reading a bit about them this seems to have everything I'd need, although I'm going on an hours worth of googling knowledge so any input would be appreciated.
  • 30xd optical zoom seem very respectable. If your pc has firewire there's an easy way to download to it for editing too. I have miniDV and believe you can't go wrong with the format. IMHO.

I bought a Canon MV800 from eBuyer recently for £150 and I am delighted with it. They are now selling the MV890 for £158.42 which looks like a great deal too.

I particularly like the option to record in true widescreen at the touch of a button. The only feature that my old JVC had that the Canon doesn't was a backlight button when shooting towards a light source (this improves the exposure of your subject) but the JVC cost me 3 times as much.
  • Can anyone tell me if the camcorder I linked to on pixmania will be able to transfer movies via usb as I've just noticed the laptop aint got firewire?

Can't help you sorry, but why don't you email/phone pixmania and ask them? Won't do any harm.
