the place I do my cake decorating classes does these, and even the tutors admit that they're incredibly sickly (as someone said, crumbs and buttercream coated with chocolate and icing... hardly any cake). Last time I was there they were preparing the models for a class, and they took a LOT longer than doing even quite spectacular cupcakes (like buttercream flowers) or detailed sugarpaste models.

But fun to try - enjoy the experiment!

I've gone mad on cakepops. I love them. Here are a few I have made. I make my own cake, and use buttercream to bind them together. Candy melts are a lot better to coat them than chocolate, I find.

  • Annieh they are gorgeous! Will def try them and weekend and let you know.

Surely we can think of something less sickly than buttercream to bind?

Some recipes just use melted chocolate to bind them, like Dr Oetker http://www.oetker.co.uk/oetker_uk/html/default/debi-8ehm3n.en.html?Search=true

Here are some I shaped in mini biscuit cutters. I froze the cake balls beforehand though, and the texture is a bit mushy. Best made fresh.
