A lightweight, upright vacuum is a contradiction in terms.

When you're using an upright, you're always pushing the motor around so it cannot ever be as lightweight as a cylinder type (though they are not cylindrical shaped any more - obiviously).

If you want a lightweight vacuum I wouldn't consider an upright, but that's just me.

I needed a lightweight upright vacuum cleaner because of spinal problems. I once tried a cylinder type and it caused me a lot of pain. Unfortunately, the one I found was not cheap - it's the Dyson DC24, but I've so far found it to be very effective (on carpet as well as hard floors) and it hasn't messed up my back.
