From your description above it sounds like you weren't trying to educate the customers at all, you were belittling them. Correcting or mocking a customer's errors of speech is about as acceptable as pointing out that they have cheap shoes or their hair is a mess.
If I was your boss I'd have been furious.
If I was the customer I'd have found something about you to belittle in return.
I bet you have horrible shoes.
There is nothing that a customer could have belittled me over. I am perfick0 -
You're so right. Having been taught the value of life-long learning, I always welcome being educated while I'm trying to do my shopping, as long as it can be done constructively.
Unfortunately that hasn't happened so far, but if it does I'll try to remember to report back.
I didn't say the method used in the example given was constructive (or in any way tactful). Having said that, if I'd been a bystander to that particular exchange I might have had to stifle a small laugh

I've decided to forgive you. :happyhear0

Great thread! It's good to have a rant now and again.
On the aitch debate, surely it has to be "aitch" because it's not spelt with an "h".
On the unique debate, how annoying is "quite unique" - something is either unique or it isn't.
My pet hates - "revert back" - all the time on television, to say nothing of "comprises OF". It's either CONSISTS of, or it is COMPRISES - full stop.
When someone enquires (will accept "inquires"!) about your health the response is NOT "I'm good" - it's "I'm well". And speaking of health, my doctor's surgery has installed a touch screen computer so that patients can check in for themselves. When you have completed all the information you get this message: Mrs .... ..... , ARRIVE ME!!!!!! I scream every time I see it!0 -

My bugbear has to be people saying nucular instead of nuclear, when clearly it should be pronounced as it's spelt!0

For me the worst abuses are floor for ground, cushion instead of pillow and 'got pen on me' instead of ink. Oh and itched instead of scratched.0

That 'arrive me' thing annoys me too. It doesn't make any sense.0

Missing from this thread so far...
Proply as the way to pronounce properly
confusion between flout & flaunt. I may flaunt my new frock but I should not flout the law!
Misuse of scientific terms - only an earthquake has an epicentre! It is not a posh word for middle!
I blame GWB for "Nuculer"0
