No offence - but I thought you meant mucking out the toilets or sweeping the floor or [what we do in gardening] shoveling manure around the place. And yes, I LOVE every minute of it!

If making tea or photocopying is above you then heavens above.

I did not say that I was above doing those tasks, just that I think that taking on the additional tasks with the additional work load it brings (with no addition to my wages I might add) is enough without having to do things that others, with less work loads could easily do.....
  • There is another alternative. You always have the ability to vote with your feet and find yourself a job commensurate with your experience.

OP, if your workload is too large, then I suggest you talk to your line manager about it.

However, I would discuss this in terms of making sure that work is delegated fairly in order to reduce your load, *not* that you shouldn't be making the tea so that the menial tasks go elsewhere. I would also give your manager a solution, rather than handing them a problem.

I would ask to chat privately with your manager, and tell him / her that although you're really, really happy to pitch in and help out with everything, you're struggling to get all the additional work done in the time you're being given, and you notice that there are some people in the team who have a bit more time than you. Give a list of all the tasks that others could do to your manager, and say that if 30% / 40% / 20% of those (or whatever) could be distributed elsewhere that would be really good. You could put the tea-making and photocopying on that list, but in amongst all the other tasks you've taken on that others could do - not just the 'menial' ones.

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

As someone else has said, most contracts contain a standard clause saying something along the lines of 'you are employed as a 'whatever' but you may be required to carry out other additional tasks'. The days of a job description cast in stone are long since gone.

Also, in most disciplinary procedures, there is a note that a failure or refusal to comply with a reasonable management request may be viewed as gross misconduct and could result in dismissal.

Never the less, if you feel that your workload is already too much and taking on these extra tasks means that your normal work is likely to suffer, then it may be worth speaking to your manager to see if the work can be more fairly allocated.

Just as a by the by ... you have been there more than twelve months haven't you? If not, don't stick your head above the parapet if you want to keep your job - you have few rights in law until after the first year.

Edit - cross posted with kiki

OP may have a point. ie. if the MD is being asked to make the tea and do the photocopying, something is wrong!! Most things I do are implied in my JD although not everything is listed out and I wouldn't expect it to be. It might help us if you give us an idea of what job your employed to do? Then perhaps we can offer opinions on if those requests are reasonable or not.

It is awful to see colleagues leave, worse still if you feel you are simply picking up their job as that would suggest the function had not ceased although often when roles are cut, there are still bits that need sharing out and picking up but the predominant role is gone.
