AFAIK they all charge a certain percentage if you want notes, although I think the ones in Tescos (and maybe other stores) will give you the full value in vouchers to spend in the shop.

Why not get some coin bags from your bank and then lodge them/exchange for notes at your bank? Some banks don't accept bags (Halifax has an X-bags-a-day policy, think it might be 3 or 4), but I often lodge bags at the Northern Bank without any problems. Okay so it's slightly more effort than just using a coin machine, but you don't pay any commission for the privilege.

I think the machines in Tescos are gone now?

Just checked http://locator.coinstar.com/MapPoint/locator.aspx - they're still showing some in a few Tescos around Belfast, although I don't know if this is up to date info.

OP - doesn't look like too many coinstar machines in Armagh.
  • there are coin machines in most tescos and asdas! they charge you 8.9p in every £1, even if you are changing it into vouchers to spend instore

That's a bit much! almost 10% for changing STG into STG or providing them with change!

I agree with taking them to the bank. Santander allow you five bags a day.

Was in a Tesco this morning in Bangor and had a look at the machine, it's full value for shopping but no fee quoted for exchange for notes at customer services which I think is misleading.

Yep, I have used the coinstar machine in Tesco and got full value of the coins in shopping vouchers, paying commission on money you will probably hand to Mr Tesco anyway at some time seems pointless :o
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:
  • no, u still get charged the commission even when u spend in store!

Strange, as the machine counted up my pennies it gave me a running total, when finished it printed a voucher token for exactly what it said on screen ?

Now the cunning robot could of been skimming me as the coins went in :rotfl:but I did get my full value of coins in a voucher :o
