Looking for strapped slippers for my Dad. Any suggestions please?

Options
Hi my Dad is suffering from pressure sores on his toes from walking in his slippers. His feet a bandaged so shoes don't fit at the moment. His slippers are big enough but, when he walks, he shuffles his feet and his toes hit/touch the end of the slipper. I was thinking about getting a strapped slipper for him so that the pressure is spread around the instep.

Would this work?
Where can I get these from. I really don't like internet shopping and would rather buy from a store.

TIA

Ask whoever is treating his feet and bandaging them what footwear would be most appropriate?

  • Cosyfeet are the main supplier:

You don't have to order online. You could ring and ask them to send a catalogue and order through the post. Ordering online would be quicker, though.

They would probably be stocked at your local 'Disableaids-type' outlet (e.g. Multicare). If they haven't got the size/style you want they would probably order it for you.

And yes, your District Nurses should be able to advise and point you to where they might be available. In practice, when supporting both my mother and an elderly friend through problems with ulcertated or swollen, bandaged legs/feet, the staff were far less resouceful than I was! Sometimes you're on your own in these things. With Mum, it was an 'Intermediate Care' setting, not the local District nurses, and pretty UNcaring they were too.

But do ask whoever's treating him; they OUGHT, in theory, to know what's available.

How about a pair of Birkenstock type sandals?

They won't keep his feet warm but I'm assuming he won't need that with the bandages on...

If that's a non starter then how about those slippers with the velcro flaps on them you see in the magazines that come with the sunday tabloids - y'know the magazines that sell lap trays and bird feeder and the like... try your local healthcare appliances shop - ours is allardyce http://www.allardycehealthcare.co.uk/productdetails.asp?catid=4&productid=168&productname=Gents-Comfort-Booties

How about from a Mobility shop (they usually have a catalogue). I have just bought a pair for my dad and they are called "Alfred" for men. They come in navy or maroon and have velcrose across. They are very wide fitting. My dad has very swollen ankles and can't wear shoes, so these are brilliant! Hope this helps :)

These are similar to the ones in the Mobility Shop :T

Perhaps one of the difficulties is the shuffling gait forcing the toes against their footwear with each step? Unless the gait changes this might probably happen whatever footwear they used.

I think that maybe you're right. I'm now wondering if the 'sore' will appear around the arch of his foot with the strapped slipper. But something has to be done. The sore on his toe is so bad now that he has been admitted to hospital for iv antibiotics.

    Thanks for all your suggestions

Best wishes for his speedy recovery. The hospital should be able to advise on what footwear will be appropriate when he returns home.
