Could I put a private numberplate bought in my name on the family car which is hubbys name?

    You specify who is named on the certificate as the person who is entitled to use the registration number on a vehicle - this much match the registered keeper.

    The cheapest way of doing it is the swap the registration of the car to your name.

    Not unless you count the loss in value of another owner on the V5.

    It is easier to transfer the cherished plate to the OP's husband.
