what to do

Hi Guys. I want to take my wife away for our anniversary next month, but have no immediate cash...i can afford £50 a month, so was wondering about applying for a credit card, and paying for it that way. Do you think i should and if so what is the best credit card . thanks and regards Garry.

Debt isn't an anniversary gift I would want to receive. :)

How come you can afford £50 per month but have no cash?
It's amazing how many people with no money think they can magic an amount to pay debt!

If you don't already have any credit, the few cards you MAY get (crap1, Vanqswiz etc) would give you enough to get a wet weekend in Grimsby and the interest rates would force you into modern day slavery.

If I thought my OH was going into debt because he wanted to take me away I would absolutely do my nut, dont do it.

Run her a bath with some nice candles in the bathroom, Cook her a nice meal, bottle of wine, nice DVD, now thats what I would appreciate being female, just a little thoughtful effort rather than money spent on me and getting into debt.

Dont get into debt save up and book when you can afford to go
Can I find out my credit score?
You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)
  • Tons of money does not have to be spent in order to show love, it's the thought that counts more than anything..

Even if you only had £5 i'm sure a Happy Meal at McD's and a small box of chocs would be better than knowing you are now in debt for x amount of years before it will be cleared off..

Take her out for a nice meal, and maybe to see a show if the budget can stretch to it..

I'm fed up of being in debt and not going to be free from it till 2016 - it's not a nice feeling and won't be getting into debt EVER again!!

I totally agree with this post. From a female's point of view, it's not how much you spend but the effort you put in. A card stating your love for her (I always keep my cards).

I think "whether I should" has been well answered now!

    For the second part:

If you can afford £50 to pay off a debt, then on a 12 month 0% on purchases deal (eg with Tesco clubcard) you could spend, say, £600 and pay this down £50 a month.

No interest, and it would all be repaid by the end of the year. You would also get Clubcard points. If you switched existing spend to this card, then you could get more points.

If you plan on a trip abroad, you should look at cards with 0% forex loading (Zero, Clarity, Post Office). I think PO also has a limited period 0% on purchase deal too.

These cards generally require a good rating - so whether you qualify is another matter.
  • I agree with the above, but they say they can only afford £50 a month... What happens if something else comes up that takes higher priority in 6 months time and can no longer pay this back as they agreed to?

The op then will be coming back saying I can no longer afford to pay the £50 after you said to do this.
