I have a job - what do I do re: signing off/P45, e.t.c...

I have a job having been unemployed for six months but only claiming JSA for past month and a bit.

I usually sign on every other Wednesday with this coming Wednesday being my sign on day. Could someone explain what the procedure is for signing off. Also what do I do about a P45? Will I be issued a new one by the job centre to take to my new employment? I start next Monday.

Well when you go to sign on maybe mention you have a job starting monday but you will still claim till the monday and you still need to look for work in case of any eventuality, i believe you call a number to cancel a claim but not sure which number it is but you can ask this when you sign on

Thank you. Do you know about my P45? I was under the impression that I will get given a new one by the job centre. Is this the case? My tax code isn't going to be the standard one as my silly ex employers messed it up last year so I owe some back. I wonder how long it will take to come through. Terrified of being on emergency tax for a while.

Thank you and good luck looking for work. It can be disheartening at times but stick with it and I'm sure you'll find something great soon.

    Firstly congratulations on the job.

To sign off there is a couple of ways, up our end you can phone your local job centre to close down the claim stating the day you are starting work and you want the last day of your claim to be the day before you start so if your starting work on a Monday the last day is a Sunday not a Friday as a lot of people think. Saturday and Sunday are benefit days too now.

I think this is the generic switchboard number 0845 604 3719 and ask to be put through to your local job centre, but on the back of your job seekers agreement (the grey sheet with the jobs you agreed to look for and the ways you agreed to look for them). You would have had to sign this at your claim as would your Personal Advisor, beside their first signature should be there phone number which will be local rate i.e. direct line number to them. They can then transfer you to the person who will close your claim down in your office.

Alternatively, again at your initial claim you would have been given a small booklet called an ES40 with your signing times and dates on it. If you can get this, and look there is sections in it for completing if you are going into work, first is full time work over 16 hours, permanent / temporary but not through and agency, (bottom left of a page), next page (top right) is if you are doing agency work, underneath on the same page, going into education, next page is any other reason such as going on a foreign holiday or claiming another benefit.

You can complete the relevant section here, before putting in the last day of your claim again making sure it's the day before you start work, Monday is Sunday, if mid week such as Wednesday it's a Tuesday etc. Sign and date the back before either handing it in (doesn't need to be yourself) or posting it in.

Make sure you do either of the above, because if you don't you will be marked as failed to sign and lose any benefits due to you from the date of your last signing as opposed to being paid until the day before you start work.

If you require help paying for travel to your new place of work remember the job centre has the ADF (Advisor Discretionary Fund) which is to overcome barriers to starting and sustaining employment so you might be able to get a bus pass for the first week / month depending on funding in your area.

If you want help with this, you need to do it before your claim is closed down and you have started work. It is not available once your claim is closed.

As for your P45, you will be sent a new one from the job centre, but bare in mind the new tax year starts next week so P60's will be getting sent out.

If your new employer does want a P45, you can hand in a P46 which will save you from being put on emergency tax.

Hope this helps and once again good luck with the new job.

PS Don't forget if you have a uniform you can claim an allowance for washing it at home. Details for up to date amounts here, some tools and other necessities too.

Edit - useful thread re the above here
