hand baggage restrictions - drinks

I understand that new hand baggage restrictions at airports require all liquids including drinks be placed in a transparent re-sealable bag. What happens if you want to purchase a bottle of water for example to take on the flight, must this be placed in such a bag? and must it only be 100ml in volume. Are these transparent bags available at the airport?

" Carrying liquids and gels inside hand baggage is prohibited or restricted at some airports. Make sure you check the rules for each airport you are departing from as they may vary. All cabin baggage will be screened at a central security area before the aircraft boarding gates. Many airports including those in the UK and US require passengers to remove their shoes and heavy outdoor clothing so they may be x-rayed with their carry-on bags."

Got back from New York today.

You can buy bottles of water in any size once your past security and take them on the plane with you.

They have supplies of plastic bags at security.

I have just returned from a trip to Prague. At Manchester airport, anything you purchased in the Departures Lounge after security was OK to take on the plane.

However, at Prague, the security checks are not carried out until you go to the individual departure gate. This means I took a bottle of water to the airport but had to discard it before boarding the plane and purchase another drink onboard. The items purchased in "Duty Free", ie some cosmetics and a bottle of liquor, were sealed in clear plastic bags which included the receipt.

I have travelled a number of times to Prague since August and the new rules concerning liquids have only just come into force there. The rules have been adopted throught the EU.

    Hope this helps.
