Hi LJM,
Can't comment on bamboo, but have recently planted willow which (hopefully) will grow into a (gentle) windbreak - gentle because it is only one willow deep.
I've just planted about 60 metres of the stuff and used willow setts (or rods/whips as they are sometimes known). This was the cheapest way of doing it for me and I bought the willow cuttings from Ebay (cost me about £18 inc P&P per 100 and I spaced them out at 30cm intervals. The best time to plant is a little earlier than now (during the dormant season), but willow cuttings root fantastically well and all of the cuttings I planted last month have little leaves on now.
I bought rods that were about a foot long (and two thirds of that goes underground). Just use a metal rod (or something similar) to poke a hole in the earth and pop the willow cutting in. The only other thing I bought was some woven weed blocking mat (again from Ebay) and I planted through that to give it the best chance to establish - since grass and weeds will compete with the willow.
Hope that helps:)0 -

It would help to know the circumstances - do you want to plant a hedge/windbreak? How big is the area you want to plant up? Do you want to screen something so is height very important? How close is the area you want to plant to buildings?0
