Book keeping courses

I currently work in admin and do basic accounts. I am basically self taught and would like to get a qualification for what I do.
I'm a single parent and it would be difficult for me to go to college one day a week - gettting childcare for going to work is hard enough. so I'm thinking of doing a course from home.
Can anyone recommend any courses and does anyone know if I would get a reduced rate for a correspondence course as you do for studying at your local college? I'm on working and child tax credits.

Hi
I do a computerised book keeping course with learn direct which you do in your own time- its very easy understand and you work through the books - and theres help at the end of the phone. You start with manual book keeping ie double entry, VAT etc then you move on to computerised. You also recieve Sage instant access which allows up to 2 accounts to be used on it - ideal for when you first start out. They also help you to find work - or set up a business on your own and can start doing peoples books after you have finished the manual bookkeeping book.
im also a single parent and i dont get any help but it can be paid monthly and is interest free. Be careful who you go with as I looked at quite a few of these courses and some prices were ridiculous (sp?) and then you had to pay exam fees on top.
Since starting this course I have got a job in an accounts company and they looked very favourably on this course as i use Sage.

Im not sure if they do the course you want but i have registered with ILA Scotland where if you earn below £15000 i think it is they give you £200 per year towards a course that they have on their site (i am starting a photoshop one) I hope that helps!0

I work in accounts training in Wales.
1 If you work in accounts you may be able to become a modern apprentice. You should speak to your local college and employer.AAT will give you a list of colleges who offer accounts training. As a modern apprentice there is no cost to you. Otherwise you would have to pay the full cost of the College course.
2 You local college will almost certainly offer basic accounts courses which you may be able to part fund via learn direct. Please contact them.
3 You can get basic Sage training via learn direct. This is ok but limited.
4. My own view is that very few people have sufficient self discipline to work on their own with remote support, which most book keeping courses offer.I know that I could not do it on my own.
5.I suggest you have a word with the local job centre. They will be in touch with work based learning training providers and it may just be possible, dependant on your personal circumstances to do something that way.
6 Please post again if you think I can be of more help.I would be quite happpy if ytou emailed me privately.0 -

Having thought about this for a while now and made some enquiries - I would like to return to my AAT studies.
I studied AAT a few years ago and part completed the last 2 levels. I have been in contact with the AAT and they have told me exactly what I need to do to complete the course.
AAT have given me a list of colleges that run the course but there are no open learning centres listed.
So, can anyone recommend open learning for AAT?
Also, what are the chances of getting funding for this? I get working tax credits and work part time. I can't afford to fund it myself and while my employer may help, I'm sure he wouldn't want to fund the whole course.
If not, I will definetely do a basic book keeping course but it would certainly be more beneficial for me to complete the AAT although it will be hard work and difficult to juggle now I am a single parent.0 -
I don't know where in the country you are, I studied at NEW college, Bromsgrove. I enrolled as a full time student, which actually means that you can arrange with your tutors to go in at a time which suits you. In my case, I would go in for just two mornings a week. You complete the course at your own speed, the tutors are there to offer support and make sure you have understood each section. There was no charge for this course, just your books. Good luck JetSo many shoes, so little time....0

I've just sorted this for one of my clients. Check out your local Community Education Department - they're normally based in local High Schools and Middle Schools. You can usually get a Sage accounting course for around £70. As they're based in schools the hours are usually very flexible and they go in stages. You can do Stage 1 basic and then enrol for Stage 2. Our Community Ed department do Sage courses every 10 weeks and at various times and days to suit single parents. If you're on benefits then the courses will be completely free. Check this route out first before you pay a fortune for distance learning. I've just saved a woman from spending over £2000 and she's working towards the exact same qualification!!"How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these."0
