i want to move from virgin and keep number?

I would like to move from virgin, as they are so expensive, i have a bt line available to me in another part of the building i am in.
when I originally set up my phone line it was with virgin and i never moved from them in 10 years.
It is very important I keep my number, but every phone company I talk to will not take on a virgin phone number!.
does any one know of a way I could move my number or even attempt to buy my number! ( if this is possible)?

thanks
sophie

BT will port VM numbers as will some voip providers.

Check out vonage, voipfone & sipgate for starters. If you use VM broadband then you could port the number to voip and use the number over your broadband connection. You could also take this number with you if you move anywhere in the country, or even abroad whilst on holiday etc.
