No work, but no redundancy pay?

Hopefully someone can help.
My husband was made redundant from his job and has been looking for an alternative job in the same company. The day before his final day he was offered a job in a different area of the business where they have different contract terms. He will basically be paid less for working more hours (only 2.5 hours a week, but still) and 2 days less holidays a year. We can take this all on the chin, as its a job at the end of the day, but the problem is he doesn't have a start date. He has now officially finished(yesterday), but doesn't have a start date for his new job. Will he get his redundancy pay to cover the weeks/months he's not working? Can he sign on straight away even if he has a job coming up? If he gets his redundancy pay will he have to give any back?
thanks!

If he doesn't have a job to go to on morning he should sign on. If there is a break in service of I think he is redundant. But what did his employer say apart from goodbye?0
