Bathing my dog

Hello,

Just a quick question....

I have a 4 year old English Springer Spaniel and his coat is quite thick and long and he gets muddy everyday when I take him for walks.

How often shall I bath him ?

I heard it is bad for a dog's coat if it is bathed lots.

Thank you :D

Hi- I don't bath my older retriever (12), just give her a rub down when she's muddy then the remains are easy to brush out. constant hoovering here though! My younger retriever (7) gets bathed in the summer with shampoo from the vet for summer eczema. We do her in the bath and scoop water over her with a jug. Needs 2 to do this as she doesn't like it!
Seldom washed my last dog (lab) but did it out in the garden with pail of warm water and a jug.
    Hope this helps

You could try one of these http://www.muddypaws.co.uk/muddy-paws-grooming-health-dry-dog-bags-and-towels/the-original-dri-dog-bag/prod_214.html

See they even have a Springer in the picture!!

Another poster (again with a Springer.... hmmm I see common thread forming here) tried one with pretty good results which you can read about here

https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2987726 I admit there is a fair bit of !!!!!ing on this thread, but around post 30 there is a positive review.

    Good luck!

In the winter when my bichon got muddy I would have to bath him once a week. A quick rub with doggy shampoo and the shower hose in the bath, pat dry and then the bit he loved I would sit and hold him on the sofa in my arms wrapped in a couple of towels and he would fall asleep while I watched TV. He would come up lovely and white again.

But being a bichon he had porous hair like a sheep so the mud really stayed.

I checked it out with his groomer and she said this was fine, he was also regulary had a hair cut to keep his hair quite short (not typical bichon big puffy style)

He did get to quite enjoy it.

In summer it may have been once every 2 months.

My sil has retrievers, and they get in a terrible mess, so they get towel dried then she leaves them to finish off drying out in the kitchen, (with the back door open in summer so they can go out and lie on the patio if they like) once they are dry most of the mud falls off as their coats are oily anyway, then she can brush them then sweep up the dried up mud.

They only get a bath when they are very stinky, the coating on their fur is natural and would probably be taken off by excessive shampooing.

I just get the watering can out with a bit of warm water and wash the worst off with toweling off afterward......my dogs don't have long coats though.

You could consider having his feathering trimmed. Lots of working Springers and pet Cocker spaniels have a haircut! It's a lot easier to keep clean and they dry quickly if you do need to wash them.

If it's just mud rather than smelly stuff I'd simply rinse it off with water - no need for shampoo so no worries about damaging the coat/skin.
