EXT2 IFS for Windows

https://www.fs-driver.org

Anyone use this? Just thinking about setting up my partition with an EXT3 filesystem, so it can be read in Linux and Windows.

Was tempted by FAT32 although I'd rather use NTFS or EXT3, and the above would help solve that although an EXT3 filesystem in windows will be read as an EXT2 filesystem, ie no journaling :(

Just wondering if anyone has had any problems with it.

  • i've been dual booting for years and never had the guts to go with anything other than FAT32.

I only scanned the link above but it seems to me to not offer anything worth risking a filesystem on.

I come from the unix/linux background and like to see a team of developers with open bug lists or source code etc when trusting something this major to a basically unknown project.

One bit of software i once tried in desperation and it worked was explore2fs.
This was probably 5+ years ago (read-only) and i see they are still going strong here. Would be worth looking at what they offer.

It's been ok for me so far. I've got a spare external drive, so I've mirrored the drive want to do it on a a test before actually going through with it. Obviously it works fine in Linux as it's just picked up as the usual EXT3 partition, so I get journalling included too.

Then when using Windows, it's treated as an EXT2 partition, so no journalling, more potential for corruption. But I'm hoping to cut back on the amount I use Windows.

I'm hoping this will be ok. I did think about FAT32 but I'd rather the above, as I at least get journalling in one of the operating systems, as opposed to neither with FAT32.
