New DVD/CD reader writer installed and ????

My computer had a combo CD reader writer and dvd reader. A friend put in an additional DVD/CD reader writer for me. Unfortunarely he lives some way away and cannot be contacted. Yestersay I ttied to write to a DVD in the new deive, but I kept being asked to insert a disk, eventhough there was one in. I also inserted a new link in the Send to folder, but this too does not recognise the new drive, merely producing a second referecne to the old drive.

Both are shown in MY Computer.

What need I do to get the new drive fully working and recognised, please?

Is it definitely a DVD writer and not a combo like your other drive? If it needs a firmware upgrade, what is the make/model of it?

  • You say you have a combo CD reader writer and dvd reader and your friend installed a DVD/CD reader writer I take it you mean you now have 2 dvd writers ? Did you friend set the jumpers on the rear of the drives to Master and slave ?
  • I had trouble with my DVD rewriter. It wouldnt work with the Windows XP wizard, kept saying put a disk in even when there was. A swap to roxio software cured the problem.

For clarification this is what I have

    Original harware

    SONY CD-RW CRX320E -CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive

    Additioanl hardware

    SONY DVD RW DW-G120A- DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM drive - IDE

As to master and slave, I am not sure; could that be part of problem and waht to do?

Just check that the master is the SONY DVD RW DW-G120A and the SONY CD-RW CRX320E is the slave.
Just slide the drives out and look at the rear between the IDE ribbon connector and the power plug you will find the little plastic spade jumper with 4 settings. Check what the settings are. The master would be the drive that needs the fastest data speed transfer, which would be the SONY DVD RW DW-G120A.

If I do, will I be able to write to the new drive from Hard Drive and the
SONY CD-RW CRX320E ? Will the old drive be unrecognised just as is the SONY DVD RW DW-G120A now?

I haven't had chance to do anything yet, as have 2 under 8 grandchildren staying- exhausting!
