AVG software clashes?

I'm on a library PC at the moment, so may not get replies until tomorrow, but wondered if anyone had come across this problem.
I tried to download the new AVG at the weekend, went through the download, clicked the restart as prompted and that's when the trouble started.
Now all the system does is startup, shut down, start up etc in a continuous loop, with not enough time while 'up' to do anything to stop it.
I assume it's clashing with one of the other startup programmes - I have a feeling the most likely candidates will be TalkTalk's own software, and Digiguide - both of which start up around the point the system is going down again.
Any easy fixes - or is it a case of take the hardrive to be fixed. I really want to avoid a system reset as I have files on there that I don't want to loose which I have been unable to back up for some time.

Surely the easiest thing to do would be to uninstall the new AVG software. Are you sure that you have not already got an anti-virus program installed. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

You could try booting in safe mode initially and removing applications / start TSRs that way. Sometimes a sudden shutdown can be conflicting interrupts- try system/device manager and check the list for any problems.0

Hi - think I've got it fixed (breathes huge sigh of relief) - thanks for your replies
In answer to your comments - until about half an hour ago, the system wasn't staying up long enough to uninstall anything - I had about 2 mouse clicks before it shut down again - couldn't even get into the control panel.
However, for some reason, when I tried it again a little while ago, it allowed me into safe mode (not been able to get to it since the download on Saturday evening) - so I've uninstalled AVG, and all seems ok.
Now - do I risk reinstalling it after clearing out the possible trouble makers, or what? I thought I had got rid of the Talk Talk antiviral before the download, but obviously not as it's already picked up two malware attacks since I got the system back up.DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
Don't understand why you want to install another anti-virus program when you already have one installed and working! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

So you have given yourself grief by installing another anti-virus program before uninstalling the first one! Only one real time anti-virus program should ever be installed, likewise for firewalls. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
