Problem is I am very MSE and am quite happy to spend 120k (and the rest) extending the house as this will add at least 120k to the house value so to me isn't 'spent' but just 'saved' whereas holidays and so on are spent and gone.Jojo_the_Tightfisted wrote: »:eek::eek::eek:
Let's try explaining it to her - those additional clothes are going to cost the family (around £50,000 - £120,000?) for a massive extension. Or it's a choice between the clothes/the extension or a paid off mortgage, a smaller extension at a higher standard and preserving some more of the garden for the children, brand new luxury bathroom, a month long all expenses paid trip to the Bahamas, all three children's University education....I think....0 -

Your wife might be making up for the holiday by shopping therapy then..

Depends on the holiday. A cultural trip with educational value for the kids is worth a fortune, as can be visits with extended family for them....and lingers for years in education, love and support and sense of identity.
Or not...depends on the family.:D 0 -
All through my kid's school life they only had a pack of 3 polo shirts, 1 jumper/sweatshirt and 2 pairs of trousers each year.
The sweatshirt dried easily overnight so it would get checked every night for marks, small marks were sponged off anything more and it got a proper wash. With the trousers I would wash 1 pair while they wore the other.
I did this to both save money and save on the amount of washing, my kids changed out of their uniforms as soon as they got in from school and the uniform was checked for marks/muck and either washed or hung up to air. I also saved on the amount of money spent on the uniform so I could pay more for some good shoes, I know quite a few kids who have a set of uniform for each day of the week but wear poor quality, cheap shoes.Dum Spiro Spero0 -
My son who is 7 has
School uniform
Black Trousers x2
Shorts x 2 ( last years trousers cut off and hemmed )
Polo shirts x 6 ( 3 plain white for the winter under the jumper and 3 school logo and red for the summer when no jumper is worn)
sweatshirts x 3 9 always seems to need washing everyday )
school shoes - always from clarkes and they last the whole school year
Other clothes
2 pairs Jeans
2 pairs Joggers
5 long sleeved t-shirts
5 shorts sleeved t-shirts
3 pairs shorts
2 shirts ( if he needs to be dressed smart his school trousers will do)
10 pairs of Pants (5 pairs replaced once during the year)
10 pairs of socks (the same as pants)
10 vests ( again replaced during the year)
I pair of trainers and one pair of imitation croc's
for every new thing the have an old thing is gotten rid of . just because we have limited space and more clothes mean more laundry ! and writing it down it looks like loads of out of school clothes but we camp a lot !I am journeying to a debt-free life.
Our estimated debt-free date is January 2040. I'm on a mission to bring that date closer!

With my son's clothes, I plan in the following way:
- I provide for clothes that are needed now but I stick to reasonable quantities because you never know when the next growth spurt is due and the current sizes are going to become redundant
- I plan for the immediate needs - right now we have enough winter trousers but he needs shorts and summer trousers and that's next on my shopping list for DS
- I buy for the future if I come across a bargain/something attractive for later, ie a ski jacket for 7-8 year olds reduced from £40 to £12 is hanging in the wardrobe for later.
It's probably easier not to go overboard with clothes spending if you are mom to a little boy rather than a little princess, mind.
I don't think that your DW would entertain the thought, but have you thought about buying second-hand (Ebay, charity shops, car boots) ? I do look out for good quality, attractive children's clothes. For one thing I don't have to worry about the clothes getting damaged/dirty when he plays outside and when he grows out of it I put the clothes back into the system for another family to enjoyKeep calm and carry on0 -
Once my youngest went to f-time school and I wasn't working, I tried to go down to these amounts (thinking I'd have far more time). What I found was though I was perfectally ok at the start of Autumn term, by about Feb, 1 pair of trousers would have a rip in the shin (someone explain why, cos mine has never gone thru the knee ever, but through the shin frequently), 1 jumper would have gone missing despite the name in it, 1 polo shirt had paint stains on it, and so on. Trying to buy an extra <school uniform item> at this time of year, when very few retailers hold more than a few bits left over from last year and it's far too early for new stock to be in (tends to come in around June) was a hard task. Throw in a non-standard school uniform eg mine have navy blue polo shirts and/or a non standard size child and I discovered I had a problem getting extra items. I went back to 5x, cos at least that way, I have enough to get thru the whole school year.ciderwithrosie wrote: »I'm amazed at people's quantities of school uniform, gets expensive especially when you have to buy the logo items.
All three of my boys managed perfectly fine with:
a pack of 3 shirts
1 tie
1 jumper
2 pairs of trousers/shorts in summer
1 PE kit0 -

Other clothes
Wellies - £5
Boots - £20
Sandals - £15
Swimming costume x 1 - what on earth does any kid need 2 for?
t-shirts x 5 - £4 x 5
long sleeve Ts x 5 - £5 x 5 -
Blouses x 5 - £6 x 5 - eh? these are not school uniform ones are they? What kids wear blouses in normal life?
leggings/trousers/jeans x 5 - I suppose, are they still wetting themselves, you can easily get by on 2 -3 pairs otherwise total, not of each type!
Fleece - £10
Cardi / sweater / sweatshirt x 10 - £8 x 10 - again, why do you need 10? 2 or 3 should do.
dresses x 8 - £12 x 8 why 8? It's only for the odd weekend, or dressing upno? when she isn't wearing her jeans/t-shirts/sweatshirts? 2-3 dresses should do it.
Socks x 20 pairs - £1 x 20 - extras not needed, school ones will do for everything.
Tights x 5 - £2 x 5 likewise, whats wrong with the ones bought for school anyway?
Coat x 1 - £20 - again, what's wrong with their school coats?
Pants x 30 - £1 x 30 - 30 pairs of pants? Are they being changed times a day? 10 tops, clean pair every day plus 3 spares/replacements.
