Hi - I'm living in Romania short term ish (12 months), and have a uk car over here. (In Timisoara)
My Uk insurance covers me for 30 days abroad, so I need to get some insurance over here - thrid party will be fine.
Does anyone have any experience of getting car insurance in Romania on a UK car?
(I noticed that "reduceditem" posted about it a few years back, but I cant send a PM directly - anyone else done it?)
Appreciate the help
Thanks

As long as you have a Uk policy & address then that will cover you to the minimum required in Romania with no time limit.
The only problem you might have is that you could fall foul of a rule about having to re-register the car in Romania if you are there for more than six months continuously although a quick trip back to the UK should reset the clock on that one. Then would be a good time to get MOT & tax redone too if you are organised.0 -
well the plan is to leave the car here and fly back in a few months, which would mean I havent been here for 6 months, but the car would- would that count?
Problem is a drive to England and back would costs near £800 by the time Ive got ferry crossings and hotels0 -
It’s all seems a bit messy so you need to check the situation yourself.
As an example, the UK government are happy for a car taken to France for less than 12 months to remain on UK plates but if a Frenchman brings a French car into the UK he can only leave it on French plates for 6 months, after which he has to put it on UK plates.
What the situation is in Romania (or how enthusiastically it is enforced) I don’t know.
You’d have thought there would be a common set of rules across the EU0 -
So - just to clarify my understanding - how is there no time limit when often insurance companies say only 30 days for a green card etc? Is it a third party vs fully comp thing or0

As I said earlier, you need to check for yourself but my understanding is……
No time limit on being legal but, if all you need to be legal in France is third party, then that’s all you get.
If you want more (say fully comp) then you need to come to an arrangement with your insurance company to extend your full policy to abroad and they can then charge and apply limits.
Any limits they apply will only extend to the extra bits and not to the base legal cover.0
