Walking tours in New York

I'm thinking about doing one of these when I go in March. There was a good write up in the Times about one today Savory Sojourns

They're not too pricey with the dollar as it is at the mo', but I wanted to know if anyone else had any experience of these and other tours. I love walking tours as it stops me wandering around aimlessly and spending too much money on transport etc.

TIA

  • Or you could try Big Apple Greeters. They are free but you need to book up a couple of months in advance.

I wouldn't bother with this. Get a subway map, free from any station. It shows the whole of Manhattan and it's associated subway lines, stations and areas. Then get either a daily or weekly Metro Card at US$7 & $24 respectively. You can use the Metro Card for all bus and rail travel within New York City. You can walk as much or as little as you choose, then when you get fedup you can hop on a train or bus and go somewhere else.

    I dont like the tours.
I like to spend as much or as little time as I WANT.
There is plenty to see and do in Manhattan without resorting to a tour and walking aimlessly around the city is part of the fun.

The walking tour of Greenwich Village arranged by the Hostelling International (not sure if you had to stay there I not - I did) was one of the highlights of my visit.
  • Thanks for the helpful replies.

As to the unhelpful ones about why I shouldn't do a tour - that's NOT what I was asking! I've been to NY without doing a tour and I missed out on doing loads cos I was wandering around aimlessly.

This time I'm doing a free walking tour and I also wanted to do a gourmet style walking one.

Lonely Planet New York has a number of suggested walking tours for you to follow yourself. I tried a couple which seemed good. These people have also have a good reputation
