CC fraud

I've just found out that my Tesco cc has been used fraudulently. I have the peace of mind that Tesco stopped the card quite quickly and that I'm not out of pocket.

Thing is, I'm 99% certain where it was 'cloned'. I was paying for petrol and there were people queueing behind as per the norm. But I felt the guy behind me was not directly behind me but more over my shoulder.

Should I report this to the police? Will the petrol station be playing an active part in the crime ie will they be cloning the cards? (The chip and pin was fixed in the front of the counter)

I'm so annoyed at not following my instincts at the time, I wanted to say something at the time but didn't want to offend - he could have been just perusing the sweets on display :(

I'll know better next time

yes, if it is happening there you would not be the only one, if they get several reports they would build a picture and be able to take action.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
  • Might be a good idea to report it - even if to check out the petrol station too!

My sister had her card cloned and we managed to trace it back to a specific petrol station, then found out that 8 other people had also had their card cloned in the same place. A few weeks later my mum had her card cloned and we traced it back to the local branch of Co-Op, turns out that nearly everyone who had shopped there within this 1 week period had ended up with their card cloned! When they investigated they managed to pin down an employee who had been working for a crime ring and he'd managed to replace all the card readers with fraudulent ones - so even if you think you're a one off it could be helpful for investigations if you say something...

You'll probably find the the police aren't really interested in logging this for you, the people who end up out of pocket are the retailers, as the bank will claim back the amount they have refunded you. It's down to the bank to investigate the fraud along with the police but these days it's so common that unless the police can link it to a bigger issue they're not really interested. Your card could have been compromised months ago, it's very difficult to identify where the point of compromise is, sometimes there's a clear link to a string of cases but the majority are never found out. If you'd feel better reporting it then go ahead, but don't feel disheartened if they don't take it on. I don't really see how someone behind you could make a note of your card details ? Plus if the transctions are mail order/internet transactions the PIN isn't needed, just the card details.
