Unfurnished Renting Question

Hi There,

My father in law has just started renting a new property and it is unfurnished I have been told by a few people that even though it is unfurnished and oven should still be supplied. Can anyone advise me if this is true as he was going to buy one but they are quite expensive. Also he lives alone and earns about 15k does anyone know of any benefits he may be entitled to or is he entitled to a council tax reduction.

Thanks

Joe

He would get a 25% council Tax reduction for being a single occupier.
  • What is included will be written into the tenancy/inventory. If there's no oven listed, there is unlikely to be an oven supplied. Decent 2nd hand ovens can be picked up for a song. The landlord has no legal obligation to provide an oven.

Your FIL might be able to pick up a cooker and any other furniture through freecycle.
  • Depending on his personal circumstances, he could be entitled to working tax credits... check HMRC website for details, or call them on 0845 300 3900.

Would he get a 25% reduction even if he is on band A? Thanks :money:

Regardless of band, as far as I know an occupier is entitled to claim the 25% discount if they are the only person living there. Why don't you phone the Local Authority and ask them?
